It had interesting moments, and some dark things, and ghost stories. It was a very chill mystery vibes. But it didn’t keep me fully captivated. I like the points the story was making. And I liked the main characters well enough, however I feel it was dragged out and made it slow imo. It ends on a question which I am assuming leads into the next book, but idk if I will be picking that one up.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author. While it wasn’t a favorite of mine, I still enjoyed the story quite a bit. I enjoyed the authors’s writing. It took me awhile to get attached to the characters but that was okay. The one complaint I have is that the chapters were just too long. However, this was a good young adult gothic fantasy

Bitch Goodreads just closed on me mid-review - I’m only just a lazy woman don’t make me write this again!!!

Incoherent thoughts:
- I actually loved the first half of the book more than the second?? 100% ppl are correct re: the book being slow to start but I was THERE for the vibes.
- All of the imagery relating to drowning, the power of the sea, slow death/ decay … UGH. So moving. I was out here highlighting my Kobo when the book is going back to the library tomorrow LOL.

“But didn’t all drownings begin with a harmless dribble of water”

- The big build up to the ending didn’t move me as much as it I thought it would, but I also have a stomach ache so maybe that was interfering with my enjoyment.
- Fuck the patriarchy and love you Effy. The way Ava Reid dealt with Effy’s innermost thoughts and anxiety was incredibly well done.

“When men fall into the sea, they drown. When women meet the water, they transform. It becomes vital to ask: is this a metamorphosis, or a homecoming?”

First of all, we all know we love Preston, I think he saved the book actually, if not because of him, this book will be sooo boring, like wdym I need to read a journey of a mad girl that always need her pills?

Okay anyway, Effy is not that bad, yes she got that prejudice at first and I also did not like it, but she know what she did and she got that character development in her. So yes she's not bad at all.

Story that pack with a little bit of magic, yes it's good, but at first maybe it can be a little boring, for me it's a page turner.

This is a far darker, heavier book than I expected it to be. The entire framework of this book is based on heavy themes (see content warnings) and I really didn’t expect that from the description. I did enjoy Effy’s growth, although I wish there was more emphasis on her healing. I loved the way Preston supported Effy though, he was respectful and kind. But there were some gaps in my understanding of the world, particularly regarding the Fairy King, that made the plot occasionally hard to follow. Overall, I thought it was a fine book and I’m glad Effy got the closure she needed by the end.
