Other than the unnecessary "let's have 2 guys fall in love with the main character upon first sight," School Spirits was a fun read with a fairly interesting plot.
This is a follow-up to the Hex Hall series, focusing on Sophie's little cousin Izzy.
It all starts out with Izzy being all morose about her missing sister and me going, "OMG, I have dementia! I JUST finished that last book and I do NOT remember Finley going missing! Last I heard, the whole family was fine! Why have I already forgotten everything that has happened?"
But then, like a chapter later, it's all explained. Turns out, it's not me losing my mind. It's just a bad set-up.
I now know better than to expect amazing things from Hawkins books but I keep reading them because, honestly, I love the voice she gives to her sassy little heroines. The stories falter, yes. I roll my eyes a lot, yes. But I still like the way this woman tells a tale so I am going to keep reading her stuff.

3.75? An enjoyable read, but not as enjoyable as the Hex Hall series that this is a spin off of.
Sad that this spin off series was never picked up, I forgot how much I enjoyed this world
1.5 stars
I read the first 3 book years ago and didn't know there was book 4. So i figure i should read it. First off this book is pointless!. Stupid drama. Her and her mom Kept bringing up her lost sister but the story never went in that direction. And also, it was said torin(mirror guy) that izzy was gonna release him. But never did. Never knew why she would. Just a bunch of holes left unanswered. I read some reviews that she's not making a BOOK 2!?.
Chile!. (Death stare)

I was lucky enough to get approved from NetGalley an eARC of School Spirits the first book in the spin-off to Rachel Hawkins' Hex Hall series, which I absolutely adored! In School Spirits Izzy Brannick is the main character, and after her sister Finn has gone missing and there have been no leads to where she is, Izzy and her mom take on a small case in Ideal, Mississippi.
The case is a haunting at the local high school, Izzy goes undercover as a student to try to figure out who the ghost is, and luckily for Izzy there is a Ghost hunting club at school called PMS (Paranormal Management Society) which basically consists of Romy, Anderson, AND Dex. Izzy gets herself an in with the group but she senses something a little different about Dex and she doesn't think it's just hormones she's feeling when she touches him, Izzy thinks he may have a Prodigium side to him, the thing is does Dex know? To top it off the Ghost vanquishing isn't going as easily as Izzy thought.
This book was a fun read and a good set up for future instalments it had aspects similar to Hex Hall, however, the book fell a bit short for me, I am a huge Rachel Hawkins fan and I think her sense of humour and her books are ah-mazing but I was expecting so much from School Spirits I might have over hyped it a bit for myself. Overall, it was a good read and I can't wait for the next book.

I really enjoyed this read. I grabbed the galley based on my enjoyment of the first Hex Hall book, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters all interested me, even those who aren't very flushed out, and I can't help myself from hoping that Is and Dex end up returning to Ideal sooner rather than later. The plot itself was somewhat predictable, especially with how often the bracelet is mentioned, but I didn't care. A romping good read.
I have just finished reading this spin-off series by Rachel Hawkins
and was not disappointed. Once again, Rachel was able to create another
phenomenal book series.
First of all, I have to say that I loved the characters. I loved that Izzy
was able to hold her own against the troubles that were pushed towards her.
She struck me as a strong and independent character, but with some flaws that
made her relatable to readers and not too shallow.
I also loved Dex. His uniqueness as a character was very refreshing. I loved how he was
able to not care about what anyone else thought about him and how he became Romy's
and Anderson's friend even when he knew that it would probably make him a social outcast.
On top of all that, he was sweet, funny, and a very easy character to like.
The plot was not so easy to see in the beginning, but as the story progressed, I could see the story unfolding. Basically, the story is about Izzy finally getting a taste of what it felt like to be a regular teenager, go to a regular high school, and make some new friends when all she had known before was training to be a Brannick. It was especially important for her to master her skills because she and her mom were the only Brannics left of their line, excluding, Finnley, Izzy's sister, who had gone missing a while ago. While Izzy was dreading going to high school for the first time and on top of that investigating a boring haunting, she did not expect to like the experience.
The only reason I'm taking away half a star is because at some points in the story, I would have liked a bit more action. I feel like there could have been some good action scenes in the story, but maybe that's just me craving for a little bit more adventure while reading.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and piecing the clues that the author left us to solve the mystery.
