I liked the recurring characters from the first book.

This had such a promising start and then went downhill in the second half of the book. The strength of this book is the author's depiction of abuse and recovery. It was gritty, ugly, and messy.

Unfortunately, the second half of the book failed to live up to the first half. Haven became less sympathetic as the story went on, and the scenarios became more predictable and less believable. I love a good damsel in distress story with a rugged hero, but this really failed to hit the right notes.

This is a fun read. You can't help but fall in love with Hardy Cates, the sexy bad boy in this series.

This book is the sequel to Sugar Daddy and picks up right where that book left off.

Haven Travis grew up in the lap of luxury. Her father is a Texan multimillionaire and her three older brothers are also successful, driven men. She has always been the beat-of-her-own-drum sister. At her brother's wedding she has an accidental, yet memorable encounter with Hardy Cates. Hardy is a rival businessman to her brother Gage and an old childhood friend/first love of Gage's new bride.

But the timing is not right for Haven and Hardy and Haven is engaged to be married herself. Haven marries her fiance much to the displeasure of her father who disowns her. Years later, coming back into the family fold much chastened after that disastrous marriage, Haven and Hardy reconnect.

This book was compulsively readable. Haven's first person narration makes one sink right into her character. Kleypas' "voice" in this book sounds very authentic, the argot and the attitudes struck me as very 'Texas'. One thing I loved about this book is that is was an unapologetic contemporary romance novel. There were no navy SEALS, no vampires, no intrigue, espionage or serial killers. The feel and tone of the book were very much reminiscent of Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Deborah Smith. I feel like I have to glom these books when I can because they feel like they are an endangered species.

Having said that, I had some real issues with the story.

First, the domestic abuse angle. I appreciate the inclusion of it in the storyline because I feel that it added some depth and texture to the story. However, I felt like the execution of that part of the story was too pat. It seemed like a connect-the-dots, text-book, typical trajectory of a story of spousal abuse. There was nothing that made this feel like Haven's story of abuse.

And then after Haven gets into her rebuilding of her life and self esteem she is hit with the Boss from Hell. That whole storyline and Haven's handling of it just infuriated me. She was just such a victim. And both of her tormentors were drawn with a very broad stroke.

I was happy to see Hardy from the previous book and he fits all the right hero tropes. So he was a major plus in the story.

I am really torn about this book. I kinda waffled over giving it 2 stars (because of my issues above) vs. 4 stars because the writing and storytelling aspect of it was very good. So I guess I settled in the middle.

Συνανάγνωση με Πριγκίπισσες!!

3.8 stars!!!
The novel started really well and unlike many other novels, it was really good all the way to the end.
The author had a way of getting you hooked, it was an emotional rollercoaster. I liked the heroine, pitied her, got angry at her for not doing anything and then understood her perspective, it was like you were going on this journey of self healing with her.
Her father’s obsession with interfering in every decision of her life, her mother’s anti-feminist thinking and her brother’s opinion on the men she is involved with is frustrating. Although they were right about Nick but they could have handled things better.
I absolutely hated Nick and Vanessa. Vanessa was just irritating and why Haven took so long to get her fired is beyond any reason.
The protectiveness the brothers showed at the opening night of the theatre was endearing. When Hardy asks Haven for a dance and all three of them had a way to refuse.
I loved Gage Travis, he was so good and understanding. He was the one who understood and supported Haven the most.
And Jack got better as the novel progressed. And I started liking him.
Gage and Jack were so intriguing in the novel that I want to read their stories.

Another winner from Kleypas - writing style was different and I don't think it was perfect, but it was perfect for me at this time. As always I'm left wanting to read all her books now!

Nuestra reseña en A la cama con... un libro

//RELECTURA//
Maravilloso

I'm not normally drawn to contemporary romances. Usually, if I'm going to read a romance I want waltzes at balls, dukes and dowagers, carriage rides through the park, and London. But this particular contemporary romance was written by Lisa Kleypas, who is my favorite historical romance writer. She's just one of my favorite writers period. So I should have known I would enjoy this book, despite it being set in modern day Texas. I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series.
