A very big book, divided in two, The Charmed Life of Alex Moore by Molly Flatt starts out as a banal look at self help genres and gurus and turns into fantasy and science fiction. Alex Moore lives a life of humdrum daily boredom until she meets Chloe who has her setting up her own very successful tech company within 6 months geared to self help wanna be's the world over. Yet Alex suffers from anxiety attacks, vertigo and nausea and begins to neglect her family and fiance. In order to relax she joins a research project in the Orkney Islands, but then meets a whole other world which challenges her newly found self. For me, the writing was not special and this novel overlong.

I got bored half way through it was almost like a contemporary trying to be sci fi and it just got weird and made no sense.

I kept picking this book up because the mixture of contempoary and sci-fi sounded so interesting to me. But then I wouldn't get further than the first chapter. This time I perservered because this cover was perfect for Autumn and the book itself is one I have had on so many TBRs.

This book is about Alex Moore. Six months ago she changed her life around and started a huge new company centred around wellness. But she keeps having these strange dizzy spells when she thinks about the Alex she was before, and then a strange man accuses her of killing someone. She goes to an island in the Orkneys (north of Scotland) and everything gets revealed to her.

Now this is definitely a book you don't want to be spoiled too much about because I didn't know what was going to happen and that was my main driving force for this book. Alex is a not a terribly likeable character, especially at the start of the book, but you get the sense that something is really wrong. Then she struggles throughout the rest of the book as her mind works against her and the pace of her life continues even without her input. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were okay,
the romance came a little out of left field
, the writing was a little all over the place but it was the plot that kept me going. I just needed to know what had happened and how it would be resolved. And I really liked how it was resolved in the end. I really enjoyed the details of this plot, I thought it was going to go one way and it went the other.

As I mentioned, the writing was a little all over the place. There would be something exciting happening and then it would be a time skip and suddenly Alex would be somewhere else. I kept thinking it was some kind of weird dreamscape/memory going on but it wasn't, the book was just written like that. I think I would have liked this book a lot more if it was about a hundred pages shorter.

3 stars!

Such a unique story that follows the story of someone experiencing a massive change and how it rattles those around them. What you don’t know is that the new Alex is the result of an experiment gone wrong. Her memories have been altered at the core and the new Alex is more confident more reckless and altogether more. The story follows as she tries to save an island while trying to save her love life at the same time.

You will either love this book or not, it's certainly fresh and unusual. A step outside the norm.

Flatt’s capable writing and evocative characterisation comes as no surprise if you take into account her editor roles elsewhere. Yet this book isn’t for everyone. The Charmed Life of Alex Moore goes so far as to hint at that with the cover. But, haven’t you learned already? Don’t judge a book by the jacket.

This was a super interesting concept and I did really enjoy the book overall, it was probably a 4 star book up until the last 50 pages. Wasn't a fan of the ending, just didnt make sense to me.

Cracker of a book, defying categorisation. Pacy, funny, twisty, lovely. Last act is a rollercoaster. Highly recommend!

The book has an interesting plot, is well written enough that it conveys its meaning and is perfectly readable but for all that I did not finish this book. I'm not sure if it was the swearing (i'm no puritan or literary purists, but the swearing felt gratuitous and seemed to be used instead of writing deeper emotions), or that I felt ambivalence towards all the characters so they never really gripped me, or just that the plot felt like it should have gripped me more than it did. For all the above reasons I can not really recommend or dissuade any one else to read it. I can only advise you to decide for yourselves. Happy reading everyone.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️The Charmed Life of Alex Moore by Molly Flatt
I seem to be stuck in a real 4 star rating rut at the moment! The books I have been reading have been good but not quite enough to blow me away and get a coveted 5 stars. This book was another 4 star for me. Engaging and fast paced with enough to keep me reading all 450 or so pages in a relatively quick timescale; ‘The Charmed Life of Alex Moore’ is not something I would’ve picked up for myself normally but as it was a @readinginheelsuk book and has been thoroughly raved about by @what.heather.loves I thought I’d give it a go. With this one I would say expect the unexpected! About a third of the way through it all gets rather sci-fi which I thought I would hate but actually rather enjoyed! It was nice to read something different and I thought the sci-fi element was dealt with incredibly well.
My one downside, and the reason it didn’t get a full five stars, was at times I just wanted to author to get to the point and it felt overdone and drawn out in places where it didn’t need to be.
Overall though this was an enjoyable read and one that is worth checking out if you fancy something a bit different!
