3.6 AVERAGE

The art is incredible. This a really good looking comic, however, the comic’s plot leaves a lot to be desired. Gaiman’s goal for this comic is to subvert the classic beat-’em up superhero tropes by telling the story of a pacifist superhero. He completely fails to do this convincingly. The way violent scenarios are resolved by pacifism are hysterically unbelievable. It has the same sort of conflict resolution you would expect from an episode of a children’s cartoon. “Oh gee golly, I bet if we just give the homicidal gunman a smile and compliment his shoes, he’ll put down his gun and join our tree-fort club.”

There must be a comic that has managed to create a convincing pacifist superhero, but this sure ain’t it.

3.5? This was interesting. Very pretty. But I don't think I was in the proper mood to read it.

Pretty good, I was not expecting this to turn into a DC story though. I didn't even know that there was a DC character named Black Orchid in the DC Universe. So it was quite a surprise when Batman showed up!

Bu kitabın beklediğimden iyi çıkması benim için de şaşırtıcı oldu.
Gaiman, çizgi roman alanında çok tuttuğum bir yazar değildir ama bu hikâye gerçekten güzel olmuş. Çizimler zaten Dave McKean'in ellerinde kopmuş gitmiş. Baskı kalitesi ve çevirisi de özenli olunca, kütüphanelik bir iş çıkmış ortaya.

This was the first major collaboration between Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean and the results are breathtaking. The art and mystery is astounding. The sense of color alone is so symbolic and telling. In many ways you can feel the major Gaiman themes in this, one of his early major works: the beauty and primacy of nature and a gentle but strange fantastical backdrop... and a love of overturning a typical climax with a more meaningful contemplative resolution.

Maybe I’m spoiled with later Gaiman, but I feel that this story could have been pushed to be a little tighter, so that’s why I put it at a 4/5.

This book broke many comic book/graphic novel conventions. There was a more or less happy ending where crime fighting was not successful. This book is certainly full of death and violence, fitting the horror comic genre. I found the artwork to be extremely beautiful in this book. This plot drew me in almost immediately and ended in a confusing, yet profound ending.

Being 2012, among other things it was very interesting reading a comic written/drawn in the early nineties--cassette tapes, music, and hairstyles were distinctive and spot on. The art is really beautiful in a painterly style. After I'd read the story, I found myself wanting to flip through it again just to look at the pictures.

The story was confusing at first both because I didn't know anything about the original Black Orchid and because Orchid herself (at least this incarnation) is just as confused. It was fun and fitting for Batman and his Arkham denizens to be woven in. Sometimes it's hard to establish a recurring character that comes and goes in the story, but Carl was done so well. All of a sudden there is text of a random eighties song being sung, and you know he's lurking somewhere even if he's not "on camera".

Overall, very well done! A mix of the environmental tones from Gotham and the Amazon.
