This series goes from a generous 3,5 to a bawling out my eyes 4,75.
It has flaws.
On top of those I have already read Warped and Spellbound, which means some of the things happening in these books, I saw from a second or third angle now. Those parts, even though I did get new information, didn't hold my interest well. I do respect the hell out of the the amount of planning these books though. And at times it is amazing to revisit a scene from within someone elses head.
I didn't have much interest in the demonica side of this world or the shy main character at first. Call me perplexed when I found myself rooting hard for her and sobbing through the finale by book 4.
The narrator starts out more softspoken than they did for Tory, but sadly that doesn't hold up for the series.
If this book doesn't hook you all that much, but you find it pleasent still then stick with the series.
It also makes sense reading it after Spellbound, as there are huge spoilers for it in here, but not so much the other way around. Maybe even Warped is a good idea, because agent Chen and Kit give us very obscure WTF moments here if you don't know them. But these small scenes with protagonists happen in all of the books. (I can't tie the Crystal Druid to these yet, because I wanted to savour it and kind of read this one as a break as he is very present in Spellbound. But he wasn't really mentioned here.)

Robin was raised to stay away from magic. Now that she lives with her uncle that has a demon in the library, apparently that's no longer possible.
This was a fast read. I enjoyed it. I like this type of book between epic fantasies because there's not a lot to process. It's just a fast, fun read. I plan to continue the series.

I’ve been craving some Urban Fantasy recently. There is certainly a big Harry Dresden sized hole that needs to be filled since Jim Butcher is starting to take his time with the series / writing other series alongside it.
This series is a recommendation I took from Booktube and one of its greatest Dresden fans, Chloe Frizzle. I definitely remember watching a video of hers where she mentioned how much she liked Annette Maries books but I don’t remember why I put this particular series on the TBR as there seem to be a lot more different series within the Guild Codex and this isn’t even the first one that was written. But these all seem to work independently from one another so here I am!
I put this book forward as a book club pick for this month and so far reactions have been mixed but I myself was breezing through it, having a good time and just finished the book early.
The book does a great job hooking you in right from the start and the fast pacing and plot driven nature with very short chapters just keep you engaged and propel you forwards.
The main character Robin is pretty naive and really doesn’t make a lot of smart decisions at all but I think that this is very much a deliberate choice as it really serves the plot and creates some honestly pretty hilarious situations. The character is supposed to be around 20 but I thought she reads much younger and the book certainly does give off YA vibes.
The world building so far seems a bit generic but there is also only so much you can do with Urban Fantasy, so I won’t hold it against it.
There certainly were a few hints towards a romantic subplot and that’s fine but there was one scene in particular where that felt really overwhelming and just cringe-y and I seriously don’t hope that this is gonna be a focus of the series going forward. So far I really enjoy the dynamic between those characters, in fact it was my favorite part of the book. Their bantering is super enjoyable and gave me a couple of really good chuckles, I just don’t want the romance aspect taking over / being the main focus of the story.
I think these books will serve as great palette cleansers. They are short, fast and engaging and I will certainly continue on with the series.
