Yet another excellent mystery thriller by author Joanna Schaffhausen in the Ellery Hathaway series. I pretty much devoured this entire series over the course of a week. I loved everything about this one. The authors writing style is engaging, well written and leaves you wanting more. I hope the author keeps writing this series. The relationship between Ellery and Reed is at the heart of these for me, I love how they support each other and grow together. Overall, this is a gripping, quick to read mystery for fans of the genre.

Every Waking Hour by Joanna Schaffhausen is a compelling mystery. This fourth installment in the Ellery Hathaway series can be read as standalone. But I HIGHLY recommend all of the books in the series.

Boston Detective Ellery Hathaway and FBI profiler Reed Markham are enjoying a day in the park with his seven year old daughter Tula when twelve year old Chloe Lockhart goes missing.  Ellery is quick to jump into the search after the girl's nanny Margery Brimwood begins searching for Chloe. Ellery knows all too well what could happen if Chloe has been kidnapped.  She is relieved when her boss allows her to take lead on the case and she, along with her partner Detective Dorie Bennett, are soon questioning Chloe's parents. Martin and Teresa Lockwood keep a very close watch on their daughter because years earlier, Teresa's twelve year old son Trevor was murdered. His murder has never been solved which leaves Ellery and Dorie wondering if there could be a link between the cases.

Ellery is tightly wound throughout the search for Chloe. She cannot help but think about her own history as the days pass without any new leads. Initially believing Chloe might have just run away, Elerry and Dorie are soon proved wrong.  The kidnapper's first demand is rather odd, but they encourage Teresa to comply. With each new command, Teresa is more traumatized but she will do anything to get her daughter back.

Although Reed is on vacation, he does not hesitate to jump into the investigation. Using his connections, he learns intriguing new information about Teresa's first husband and the circumstances surrounding their son's death. As he digs deeper into Trevor's case, Reed is beginning to form a hypothesis about what happened to Trevor.  At the same time, he continues working on Chloe's case.  As Reed grows more certain of the kidnapper's endgame, the search for the missing girl intensifies.

Every Waking Hour is a riveting mystery with a clever storyline and an interesting cast of characters. Ellery is intense as she vigorously pursues every lead she and Dorie unearth.  The unanticipated arrival of Ellery's half-sister is an added complication but proves to be beneficial to both siblings. Reed is also dealing with difficulties in his personal life when he learns unexpected information about his ex-wife. With stunning twists and shocking turns,  Joanna Schaffhausen brings this exciting mystery to an action-filled, satisfactory conclusion. A jaw-dropping development  will leave readers anxiously awaiting the next mystery in the Ellery Hathaway series.

I am so invested in this series and in Ellery and Reed. I thought the kidnapping was a nice change of pace and thematically it tied together the mystery, Ellery (and Reed's) flaws and history, and Tula and the status of Ellery and Reed's relationship. I think Schaffhausen is brilliant at balancing these books between the emotional metaplot and the mystery of the day.

An interesting mystery with many intersecting story lines. I like the alternating POVs. I will definitely look for more of Joanna's novels in the future.

Every Waking Hour is the fourth book in the Ellery Hathaway series. While it is possible to get through it as a standalone, I'd recommend reading the previous books - something I have not done - because of the sheer trauma of the lead character, who was abducted by a serial killer and survived until she was rescued by Reed Markham, an FBI agent. Hathaway is now a detective with the Boston PD, and winds up being the lead on the disappearance of Chloe Lockhart, who vanishes at a fair at which the pair happens to be at with Markham's young daughter.

I don't mind characters who have some Bad Thing in their past that winds up shaping them. It's a bit harder to imagine them in various stressful professions (like a detective) when they clearly exhibit PTSD symptoms as much as Hathaway does. While it strikes me that she's obviously very strong to have survived a hellish near death experience, it would give me pause to set her out on the street where the very possibility of the same thing happening to someone else - like the missing Chloe - could potentially derail their ability to perform her duties. I'm also not a fan of Markham and Hathaway's relationship, but I understand why it's there for fictional purposes.

That aside: it's a good story, with many excellent suspects, following clues that often lead nowhere (as is often, unfortunately, the case), some nice red herrings thrown in, and while not an entirely unexpected ending (if you remove all the potentials when you read it, you'll understand), a satisfying one. There's also a fascinating subplot involving another Lockhart child, along with a bit of discussion about protecting kids versus basically jailing them.

Overall, I'd recommend it unless children in danger is not your bag. A solid four out of five stars.

The Ellery Hathaway series just gets better and better. If you have not read the previous 3 this is a great place to start. Enough of their background is given so you understand the relationship between police Detective Ellery Hathaway and FBI director Reed Markham, and you do not really need to know that in order to follow their work in figuring out who has kidnapped a 12-year-old child. The end is fabulous especially since it is not really the end. A long-ago unsolved murder that was uncovered during the investigation and thought perhaps connected to the current case is also solved. And boy, what a surprise it was.
