I can't really stand this book. I quit after "book one". It's such trash, in my opinion. I also can't help but compare it to the much better television show of the same name. Sucks that I have three more of the bind-ups, too. =(

I simply did not like this. I liked the writing style and I love the show. However, the plot was mediocre, the romance which was a huge part of the plot was terrible and unable and I just could not find myself enjoying this book. I pushed through this cringing the entire time.
Elena was bratty and I understand why Stefan as originally intrigued by him but for them to fall head over heels for each other is just wrong. She didn't question Stefan once this entire book and used Matt like he was nothing.
I was going to read the second book and I still might just because I want to see what happens next but idk if I can power through that one like I did this one.

Het is totaal anders dan de tv serie. Ik stoor mij hier echt aan en kan het helaas niet los van elkaar zien.
I'm a huge fan of the Vampire Diaries television series so I picked up the books hoping they would be good since I had heard good things about Midnight. It actually took me a while to read because I felt like The Awakening was really slow and so was half of The Struggle. I guess this was because I knew most of the information from tv. But after about 300 or so pages the series got really interesting and took a surprising turn from the tv series. So I'm definitely going to be reading the next book in the series.
So I was really excited to read this because I have watched the series a few times. I think that ruined the book for me…a lot of differences. The writing seemed so rushed and I will not continue reading the series.
Author: LJ Smith
Pages: 492
Publisher: HarperTeen (June 26, 2007)
Elena: the golden girl, the leader, the one who can have any boy she wants.
Stefan: brooding and mysterious, he seems to be the only one who can resist Elena, even as he struggles to protect her from the horrors that haunt his past.
Damon: sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him. Determined to have Elena, he'd kill to possess her.
Collected here in one volume for the first time, volumes one and two of The Vampire Diaries, the tale of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them.
VAMPIRE DIARIES: THE AWAKENING
A great first book in the series, it was captivating and bone-chillingly real. It started out somewhat predictable, but LJ Smith manages to throw you for a loop as the story progresses. And you can’t help but love each of the characters, even the unlovable ones. The ending leaves off on a cliff-hanger, but the next book picks up right where it left off.
LJ Smith is one of the most amazing vampire authoresses there are in today’s YA market. If you’re looking a phenomenal read, pick up this book. (Or any book by her.)
VAMPIRE DIARIES: THE STRUGGLE
If the first book was great then this book was fantastic. We see much more of Damon—which is a great thing—and Elena is constantly being tested. But her friends Bonnie, Meredith, and Matt are always behind her, along with Stefan of course. Before you know it, you’ve turned the last page and are running to buy the next book.

While there are distinct differences between these first two books (in one volume) and the tv show, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Spotting the elements from the original story that inspired parts of the tv show is easy. I can see why certain things were changed in the screen adaptation — drama, backstory, relatability, etc.
As for these first two pieces of The Vampire Diaries saga, I could not hardly put the book down. Elena, the primary female protagonist, feels a bit narcissistic, but I still oddly find pieces of her relatable. The history and flashbacks are woven into present times nicely and only add to the excitement of the story and its characters. The supporting characters all work well in moving events along. I do wish that more development would be given to certain characters, but I hope to find that in the next volume with the third and fourth books. I’m riveted to the point of already having my bookmark in that volume, because I must know how the story concluded originally in its own right AND compared to the tv show I love.
