Part 1: Loved it. Jonas' "hometown" always fascinated me. Getting to see it from another character's point of view was wonderful.
Part 2: You don't notice it at first, but the author's voice changes in part two. Lois goes from short, almost terse, sentences to longer and more poetic imagery.
Part 3: I kind of hated it, to be honest. I'm glad there was some closure and ending to the characters but the whole Trademaster plot was way out of left field.

No. Not a wish fulfiller in any way but a genuinely good read. People may say it dragged but it’s also a twoish hour read so...except for the training part...really Lois you can skip Gabe and Claire reuniting again but 4 chapters of pushups and pull-ups is fair game...ok.
Thanks for encouraging my full curiosity and absolute irritation. Also magic in books that have such real human problems always fascinate me, and I always wonder if it is post apocalypse given.
This wrapped everyone’s stories up with a neat little bow, and honestly could have been the second book and then no one would torture themselves with the in between ones.
I’ve stayed up too late reading this dang book. Lois thanks for an enjoyable 3 days of weird af writing style and civilizations. Night.

I read The Giver in elementary school, and that copy is still with me, beaten up and loved. I loved Gathering Blue as well, and enjoyed Messenger -- so it is with this in mind that I call Son a well-written ending to this quartet.
Though it could be considered a stand-alone novel, I think it is best read in conjunction with the first three. Lowry did a great job bringing in characters from the previous books.
The Giver will always be my favorite of the four, but this was good too.

Interesting tale that ties together the 3 earlier books of The Giver Quartet. That said, I was less interested in finding out what became of Gabe and Jonas and would have liked to read about the transformation of the community when the memories were released after Jonas left. Maybe a book idea for Lois Lowry?
The book is broken out into three sections. I really enjoyed the first two sections but the last section was horrible. It left so many questions plus it was beyond boring. I would stop at the giver and not read the whole series if I were to do this over.
To begin... The Giver is one of those books that I'm just so emotionally attached to. I read it to my class and will never forget their faces and the tension as we finished the book. It's just so close to my heart.
That being said, I thought it was so interesting how Lowry made companion novels... Not quite a trilogy, you had to read through it to even find the connection. I was curious as to how she would choose to end it, over a decade after it began.
I absolutely loved it. Water Claire had enough of her own story, as it melded with Jonas and Gabe's, to make me appreciate her as well. And I love the insight that Lowry gives us into her future world- not just the community, but everything outside of it.
The one downside (although I still give it 5 stars) is that this book is more obvious than The Giver. While the beauty in The Giver is the not knowing, the trying to figure it out, the sense of making sense of the community... That isn't true for Son. She tells us so much more, and there's less to 'figure out' as we go.

It took me awhile to really get into this book. I enjoyed reading about Claire’s forest community from a different point of view, but once she got to the first village, I thought the story kind of stalled.
But once Claire started the climb, the story picked up again and I was sucked back in again. I loved reading more about Gabe and his search for his past, and I enjoyed seeing what became of Jonas.
For as much as they talked about the Trademaster being pure evil, I didn’t really feel it. Sure, I didn’t want Claire to make the trade with him, but I didn’t feel as afraid of him as I think I should have. And the ultimate confrontation wrapped up fairly quickly, which seemed a little to easy for how evil he was supposed to be.
In all, though, I enjoyed reading this series and seeing more of the world Lowry created.

3.5 stars. I wish the ending would have wrapped it up a little bit better!
