More enjoyable than the last two books, but still not as interesting as the first.
This book was a well-rounded conclusion to [b:The Giver Quartet|17234575|The Giver Quartet|Lois Lowry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1367018855l/17234575._SX50_.jpg|23752472] that allowed readers to see how all of the main characters we were introduced to throughout ended up. The book also introduces a new character, Claire, that adds depth to both the Community we were introduced to in [b:The Giver|3636|The Giver (The Giver, #1)|Lois Lowry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342493368l/3636._SY75_.jpg|2543234] and to the world Lowry created at large. All that Claire had to go through in her short life was devastating and disturbing to read about, especially learning more about the job of Birthmother from the eyes of a 14-year-old that is forced to give birth to a child with no understanding what is happening to her.
It was good to see more of Jonas within this novel, as well as seeing Gabe grown up from the baby he was in The Giver and the young child he was in The Messenger.

To be honest, I started this book gearing myself up for disappointment, figuring no one could maintain the quality exhibited in the first three books of The Giver Quartet. I was wrong...Son did not disappoint. While my favorite section of the book was the middle third, I did find the end satisfying.

First thing first, compared to the preceding books, why is this one so long?

As an ending to the series, I like it but not fully satisfied. I have questions since reading the first book and that I was hoping to get it in this one but nothing.

It was quite a boring read especially the first half but it gets better near the end so reading this will surely test your patience.

There were parts that dragged for me but I think that was because I wanted a fast resolution to the overall story line. This book does nicely pull all of the other books together and gives them resolution.

Definitely still had some questions when this book ended, but I love how the books were all tied together. Her writing is beautiful. I may have to reread them all, closer together, so that I can better recall what happened in the previous stories as I'm reading. (Kind of like my problem with reading Harry Potter.)

I really liked this series, I've loved The Giver since I was young and it was so exciting to realize there were sequels. I love the characters and although the plotlines are simple the details are always enjoyable. I started to suspect towards the end of this one, though, that there might be some kind of euphamism at work here...the Trademaster as the Devil (or Evil as he is described), and the trades he offers as temptations from the Devil? Then if you resist and defeat him, you get to heaven? Oh well, either way, these books make me feel good and they have a special place in my heart.

3.5

This book was fantastic. I loved Claire and seeing the giver in a different p.o.v. She was a birth mother that had her child taken away from her just for people to say they were going to kill him. Their society was so interesting to me. Then when she left I was a little thrown off and I didn’t like it as much until I loved it. She trained to go find her son, she sold her youth, then watched him from afar for years. It was such a sweet story. Especially when Gabe saved her. I loved how everything wrapped together and the characters came back. I don’t think everything was explained but I didn’t mind. Also the only thing I didn’t like was the book ended to early. We didn’t get to see Claire and Gabe unite which really upset me. Otherwise I loved the story from beginning to end. It was about a mother who wanted more then anything to see her son grow up. It was so heartwarming.

This is a short review of all the four books together!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SERIES!!!!!

4 Novellas that tell 4 stories that can also be read as stand-alones. Each story is unique with its description of the world, yet when you read all four Novellas you can see the larger picture.

Awesome concept, amazing narration that will leave you wanting more... A LOT MORE!

It took me a while for me to be able to start this book after ending the third book, as the ending did not agree with me. Once I got into it though, it was okay. The book was a bit slow-going at first, but it got better as I approached the end.

I think this was a good ending to the saga. It tied together aspects and characters of the three previous stories. You get to see what happens after the events of The Giver and Messenger. The second part of the book introduces a new element and a new community with all new characters. However, once that part of the story ends, you don’t find out what happens with these new characters. It’s the one village that is introduced without a revisited conclusion of the story.

Overall, I’m happy I read all of the books in this series. Now that I know more about the characters and their futures, I appreciate The Giver all the more.
