For the most part, I particularly enjoyed the world building in Gameboard of the Gods. I did find the world in the Age of X similar to those in the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series, but that's the point of literary tropes, no?

What bothered me about this new world didn't come up until the end, when someone mentions that humans have pushed the gods away, and the gods are pushing back. To me, that screams mythology, not religion, but the whole new world reconfigures itself to remove religion, not mythology. For whatever reason, that left me more confused than the exposition.

Looking forward to spending more time in this world.

So Gameboard of the Gods was the first installment of The Age of X series written by Richelle Mead. The first 3 quarters of this book were all set up and hardly any action. I definitely found that so much happened in the last quarter that I could barely keep up. Let's hope as the series goes on Justin March will become more likeable... But I loved Mae, who was the usual badass heroine we expect from Richelle :)

This is an exciting new series from Mead. I am really looking forward to reading more from this series.

Even after finishing this book I am having a hard time deciding if I really liked it. It was kind of hard for me to get into and I am not sure why. I am intrigued enough by the story and the unique world Richelle has created to put the next book in my queue.

interesting concept well rounded characters

My little sister and adopted little sister worship Mead and wanted me to read this book so badly I thought they might revolt if I didn't. After six almost back-to-back Vampire Academy books I wasn't sure I had another Mead in me so soon but man, this was a good book. I'm so glad my girls pushed so hard for me to read it.

This is the first time I've read a writer and within a hundred or so pages was hit with how much the author has grown. Mead's VA books were fun and good but there were some style issues that made me wary of more of her work. Back story was handled much better in this book. Previously, Mead dumped information all over the place but this time Mead held it back and had more control. I will admit there were some moments when I didn't have enough information and just had to trust her. RUNA, for example, shouldn't have taken roughly 100 pages to be defined. There were also some strange things with genetics of people, numbers and such that were important but not explained as well as they should have been. Even with some fuzzy places it was worth it to continue reading.

Despite some of the flaws, I thought the characters were great. Yes, there were some patterns that Mead has that came through in this book but I like that and didn't feel like they were over whelming. Strong females, sexy men, and interesting side players. Mae is very cool. Some people say she's just like Rose or whatever other female lead Mean has written but I really liked Mae anyway. She wasn't a fresh character but she was solid, likable, and someone who made it easy for me to comfortable and settle into the story. I will admit I didn't care much for the sections focused on Tessa.

Also, I hate to admit this but I didn't figure out how Justin's god was until I was told, even though there were a total ton of hints dropped. I was also unhappy with who the villain was. Grrr. Always giving one of my favorites a hard time. No good.

People are all up in arms that this book is so different from the Vampire Academy books but I think this series has loads of potential and is off to a great start. Oh, and it's better written to boot.

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead I haven’t taken this long to read a book in quite a while.  I don't really have a Love/Hate relationship with Gameboard of the Gods, but maybe a Bored/Really Liked one.  The story starts out so SLOW; I never thought I would get through it.  It didn’t help that it is written with a third party narrative.  I’ve never been a fan, and it almost found its way to my DNF shelf.  But then things started getting a little crazy and my interest perked up.

The story is set in a dystopian type world, taking place in what they call the ‘Decline’.  It takes a while to find out what caused this, but I could see it happening in our future.

I will read the next; this story has me hooked!
