Love this book and the hero. Stephen was the best guy... kind, a conscience, handsome... an angel.

Review - An enjoyable read overall. Nevertheless, it annoys me slightly when the history of the characters isn't really explained. I would have liked to have found out more of Cassandra's past with her first husband, and particularly with her stepsons. I did enjoy the way that Stephen's sisters accepted Cassandra so readily. I also loved the exploration of trying to rehabilitate a Regency reputation.

Usually, I love all Mary Balogh books. This one just didn't gel for me. Normally, I like my heroes dark and tortured, not the heroines. I just didn't feel any sexual tension between the H and h, and frankly, Stephen didn't seem to be great shakes as a lover either. I suppose it was an interesting premise, but I'm hoping the dark and mysterious Con Huxtable will make the last book in the series work better for me.

Two things that I really love about these books: 1) The characters are flawed with flawed, interesting backgrounds. 2) The way the author deals with violence against women, children, and animals. Balogh makes sure that everyone of importance condemns bullies and anyone who uses their fists before their brains, but she is also not afraid to have a character throw a punch if necessary. I also love this novel for the way the stories of the side characters play out. Most importantly, the heroine is amazing and OLDER than the hero for once. She's jaded and scarred but doing her best to take care of herself and those around her on her own. I guess I really don't have the right words for how much I admired her. And I also admired the hero for admitting to making mistakes and doing his best to make amends, take the higher road, and not give up. I think I actually may like this pair better than the last one, and I really liked them.

2.5 rounded up. So many recommendations to read Mary Balogh if I love Lisa Kleypas. It was okay. I loved sweet Stephen but so much of the story was repetitive and tedious. The same conversation reiterated over and again. I will try another of her books just to see.

A normal romantic novel. Enjoyable but normal. I find that I'm not partial to romances where the heroine has to sell/"sell" her body for money and security.
Well, come to think of it, most Regency romances would fall into this category since they had to marry if they don't have a fortune of their own or they don't want to [be a] burden [to] their family. So...let me rephrase that. I'm not partial to romances where the heroine has to become a mistress or a prostitute.
Anyway, I really liked Stephen even in the previous books in the series. This book made me like him more. I love that even though he appears to be weak, he really isn't. I'm a bit indifferent to the heroine but I like her back story.
Overall, I think what made me just not love this story (only like) are the references to fate and meant-to-be's. I guess I just didn't feel that it WAS fate and it IS 'meant-to-be'.
