AHHH! Friends, I am smiling like an idiot right now! Just like... full-on grinning. This was a silly silly book, but it was everything to me. And it made me so happy. I don't know what Rainbow Rowell puts in their books, but I'm in love. I'm obsessed. This book... yeah. I just am speechless. It made my hopeless-romantic, angst and magic-loving heart so happy! By all accounts, I shouldn't have liked this story. It's an enemies-to-lovers, slightly unlikeable characters, vampire book! And yet I am head over heels. And the ending was even good this time!! I know this book isn't perfect, and I know there's been some controversy about Rainbow Rowell, so I guess I should just note that. But this book was truly amazing. It's been a while since I've felt quite like this after reading a book! I had actual things to say but my brain is so scrambled... so here are the things I loved!

The dialogue! It was so well-written, and as someone who struggles with that particularly in my writing, I need to know how Rowell does it. The angst and the romance was sooo well-written. I loved the way she turned a classic story and its tropes upside down; not everyone are as they seem. The "evil rival," the "chosen one," the "fair meaden love interest..." all of them were packed with such nuance and I really appreciated that. I might come back later with more coherent things to say... but I loved reading Fangirl last year, and this was on the same level; if not even higher because it had a satisfying ending! I just fell in love with this book, and I'm not sure if I'll even read the sequels because I'm so satisfied with how the story ends... are they worth it? Someone let me know lol! Anyway, read this if you never really liked Harry as a character anyway, if you love a good "fools in love" lol romance, or if you just want a light, entertaining story that will sweep you off your feet and leave you sighing with contentment.

A delightful young adult fantasy. There’s a magical school and the chosen one, but it doesn’t feel stale. This is enemies to lovers romance with great friendship and interesting magical mystery with plenty of foreshadowing.

Simon is being quite obvious with his obsession on his roommate “nemesis”. We don’t really meet Baz on the first fourth of the book (or thereabouts) but he’s definitely still present. (Simon actually had to make a deal with his friend that he’s not allowed to talk about Baz, and I’m laughing my ass off about it.)

It’s a lenghty book, but it doesn’t feel that long. While the reader might not be exactly surprised, it’s a very entertaining journey from start to finish. The writing is funny, things keep happening in a good pace, and there are no big lore dumps.

I had to stay up most of the night to finish this, just couldn’t put it down. I’ll be sure to read the sequels, even though this novel stands alone. The cover is so cool too, I was already a bit in love with Baz just from the picture.

I wonder how long he’s wanted this.
I wonder how long I’ve wanted it.
I’d say that I didn’t—that the possibility just now occurred to me for the first time. But if that’s true, then why is there a list in my head of all the things I’ve always wanted to do to Baz.

This was a strange read for me. On one hand I got addicted and really liked it, on the other I thought it was quite bad. Some parts are just straight up Harry Potter.

I felt the whole ending was rushed. The relationship between Simon and Baz was too much too soon. I was anticipating it for a long time, but when it first started I felt it was unrealistic.

I mean, overall I enjoyed the book. It was a nice, quick read. But it was -bad- a few times.

It’s very simply written, both grammatically and story-wise, so it’s easy and quick to read, and because it’s quick it’s worth checking out.

Can pretty much copy/paste this review for book two.

Oh man! I don't know what I expected honestly but this wasn't it and I am very happy with this book! Rainbow Rowell never disappointing, its another book you just have to pick up cause its quirky, it makes you laugh at times and it's just lifts your mood. It was very interesting to see Rowell explore the fantasy world which she's never really done and I really liked this world she created. It sort of reminded me of Harry Potter a tiny bit but I really enjoyed its originality.

The characters
They were great! So easy to relate to, I really enjoyed reading out of everyone's perspective a little bit. I especially loved Simon, Baz and Penny (Penelope). They were my favorite characters and I loved hearing their thoughts and how they were feeling. Especially Baz struggling with him loving and absolutely hating Simon at the same time. I love their relationship that developed and how they got along in their odd ways.

The writing
It did not disappoint either, I flew through this book and it felt so natural which is one of the things I adore of Rainbow Rowell. Her books always cheer me up, her writing is funny in her own ways and I can't do anything but enjoy her books.
