What You Need to Know: This book is for a really specific audience--people who are too afraid to watch horror movies but still enjoy knowing everything they can about them--including spoilers and plot details because they know for sure they're too scared to watch. In other words, ME!
My Reading Experience: This book was made for me. I am that person who hears people talking about the scariest movie they just saw and runs to Wikipedia to read the entire plot summary, spoilers and all, just so I can know all the grisly, gruesome details without having to actually experience them in real time. The problem with horror movies are the visuals that get stuck in my brain and haunt me while I'm trying to go to sleep. My mind will replay the worst scene from a movie over and over again on repeat. It's no use trying to make my brain stop--it won't listen to me. It tries to assault me with terrifying visuals until I just give up and turn the light on or watch Spongebob Squarepants. The best thing for me to do is just not watch horror movies. Sometimes, I try to be courageous and I make myself go to a big, exciting release (like Hereditary) or my daughter peer pressures me into watching something (like Midsommar) and I always regret it. This book explains the whole movie for weenies like me who refuse to watch it. Weirdly enough, I have seen over half of the movies in this book, but I only enjoyed the experience for like 10 of those. Ha!
..
I refused to watch several of the movies
..
I saw and hated myself afterward two of the movies
I loved Emily's plot summaries, asides, and personal anecdotes. It was like talking about scary movies with a best friend. Plus I tucked away all the fun facts and things I would have never known if I hadn't read this book. So much to learn here!
Final Recommendation: Even though this book is supposed to be for scaredy cats and weenies, I think horror movie buffs will enjoy Emily's commentary, fun facts & trivia, and all the jokes and asides. A great bedside or coffee table book. Makes a great gift for cinephiles.

Very informative, with a sense of humor. While sharing the cultural impact and/or significance.
She does describe parts of the movies, so if you are really squeamish, this might be a bit much. However, I wouldn't call them graphic descriptions.

Just a perfect piece of nonfiction! I was a good test case for this - I had seen 19/25 of the movies. A few of the ones I’d missed, I’m actually interested in watching having read the synopsis, and the others - well, I am just thankful that I never have to actually watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so thank you to Emily Hughes for saving me the time. This book contains a thorough synopsis of each movie, followed by a “Why It Matters” section, followed by a few “Say this at a party” tidbits/fun facts about each movie. At the end of each entry is a “Can’t watch it? Read this instead” section with thematic book suggestions (also great if you DID watch and want more, of course!)
I don’t buy a lot of physical books these days, but Quirk books really did a great job with the physical object. The design and colors are fun, it’s a good size, and I’m glad to have it as a physical object on top of the great content it contains.

I, a self-proclaimed weenie, declare this book as a must for anyone who loves movies but can't bring themselves to watch movies.
It's complicated, yeah.
Not only does this book offer solid summaries, but also gives you nice little tropes and fun trivia to look cool at parties (What's cooler than hearing about obscure horror movie details?)
I had SO much fun; I want Emily to tell me about every horror movie she has ever watched.
Definitely recommend it!

Soft DNF. Hoopla borrow ran out and exceeded limits. 🤦🏻♀️
I can tell I’m a weenie cause I found this cover pretty creepy and had to leave it upside down so I wouldn’t jump scare myself.
Pretty fun! The humor is a touch too online sometimes and it can be distracting, and some of the writing is a bit cringe (ugh millennial humor sometimes) and inconsistent (sometimes the content warnings are very thorough and helpful and some are deliberately cheeky and vague). This book feels very targeted for a specific demographic. If you fit it, it’ll likely work for you. If not, I can see many reasons why not.
Anyways, she covers some major important horror movies (with only rare odd exclusions or inclusions) and there are some fun tidbits and trivia that were new to me. As someone who loves reading and listening about horror (but not usually watching it), this scratched a very specific itch. The descriptions are more thorough than your average IMDb or Wikipedia summary which was nice. The inclusion of most iconic moments was a good choice. The tropes part felt like it was trying to add something to pad the book, and TvTropes does it better, but that was fine I guess. Wouldn’t go out of my way to read more of these, but would probably read them if they came my way.

I absolutely loved this book. While I'm definitely too much of a weenie to watch most horror films, I love reading about their plots. Finding a whole book to put the movies together for me was a treat. Beyond the descriptions of the plots, I enjoyed that the author put so much care into breaking down the political and social climates that influence themes in film, classic tropes, and little details like "you should watch this if ___, but you should definitely avoid it ___." She also added book recommendations for each film, in case the reader can't bring themselves to watch the movie, but wants to read something with a similar theme. Overall, the perfect book for someone like me!
