A short and simple read. This book is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with the actual story of the Butler, while the second part deals with the movie and its production. Quite a good read. Not exactly your history book. Would have been more interesting if there were more stories included in the book from the Butler himself.
The story of the butler is heartwarming and surprising. History in America is so seldom shown from this point of view. The first half of this book is captivating. The second half is more about black history in the movie industry and not as interesting.
Not really what I expected, though I did find this audio book interesting. I thought that it was going to be the story on which the recent movie was based. However, this short book, only 2 CDs, was partly the newspaper article (and how it came about) that inspired the movie, along with parts about making the movie and black movie history and each president under which the butler served. Although, I now know that the movie doesn't really follow Eugene Allen's story, I would like to see the movie.
April 2019 - I didn't realize that I had already listened to The Butler until I came to add it to Goodreads. (I am not sure if that it good or bad!) I did enjoy listening to it again; so much is still so relevant five years later. I still haven't seen the movie and I still want to watch it.

I've read parts of the original Washington Post story that Haygood did on the life of Eugene Allen and his years working as a butler in the White House and was looking forward to a more fleshed out story. Instead, this book only covers Haygood finding and befriending Allen and the subsequent making of the movie based on his life.
If you are a movie buff, you will find the part of the filmmaking interesting, but I was disappointed that I didn't get more of a biography of Eugene Allen.

I was such a fan of the movie and was super excited to find this on the library shelf. It was a great look into the real life of 'The Butler' and how the article inspired the movie. The first half of the book focused on Eugene and his life at the White House and his family. The second half spoke about making the movie and the history of blacks in cinema. When reading about Sidney Poitier and Birth of a Nation, it was eye opening and scary to see the same issues happening currently. Overall, a great insightful read for any fan of the movie.
The book was definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting to get the story that was told in the movie, but instead got the stories surrounding how Eugene Allen's life came to be known and adapted to film. It's kinda like reading a special feature about the movie. I still enjoyed what I learned from the book and the deeper historical and personal context given for the stories, but I have to read the original news article and watch the movie to get the story I thought I'd get. But I'm not too upset about that ;)
