I know this is meant for teenagers but to be honest I think maybe the 9-12 market is a better fit, and even then I feel like Grisham has underestimated his audience. It's an interesting concept, and could have been so much fun, but it feels over simplified in places and full of clichés. The characters were pretty one dimensional, and the ending was really irritating.
This felt too much like an old fashioned Hardy Boys book, and not modern or complex enough for the young readers that would be interested in the subject matter.

I would have liked this a lot more if it'd been a stand-alone.
I enjoyed this book, found it an easy read. Some parts were a bit too like a text book, and Theodore came off a little wooden as he explained aspects of law to his friends. Also, Theo's home life seemed strange... the family always ate dinner at 7, his mom - a busy divorce lawyer - made him breakfast every day, while his dad - a tax lawyer - left the house early, and no one ever seemed to walk the dog.

Loved this series as a kid… I thought I knew everything there was to know about the law because of the series. Definitely shows a wide range of courtroom proceedings.
A good start
It’s not as intriguing as I would have liked but it does seem to set the stage for more compelling stories going forward as we are introduced to a lot of characters (many of which don’t serve much purpose to this particular story). As an introductory book for kids to learn the basics of law and the trial by jury process, it explains it well and repeatedly for the young reader to grasp it all. However the trial started J’s a murder trial. There is some alcohol use and mention of drugs. It seems more fitting to classify this as a YA but the character is only 13 - so it’s a borderline book, in my opinion.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was meant to be a young adult book and I suppose if you look at it that way then it was good. Being a Grisham fan, however, makes it seem more like a watered down Grisham novel starring a spunky, know-it-all kid. It has some real promise. The scenes involving Theo and his washed-up lawyer of an uncle were the the standouts in the book. I enjoyed it enough to read the next entry. Knowing what to expect, I'll probably like it more. Good, quick read.

Amazing book! I actually ended up learning a lot from this though the ending did make me a little upset but oh well it was a good book. :))

My high review of this came because I truly did enjoy it, despite it's problems.
Reading it was fun. The idea of a kid so interested in being a lawyer that he gives legal advice to his friends at school is an interesting one. While I found it unrealistic, I did enjoy how capable Theo was and his profound interest in law. I also really loved his family dynamic; it was different in some ways, but full of love and support.
The problems were abundant. For a kid book (middle grade or ya, it didn't really fit well in either), not a lot happens and I'm not sure most kids would be interested enough to read it. The main character was fun, but almost felt like a mini adult instead of a thirteen year old boy. There was a subplot with one of his friends that felt thrown in and irrelevant; I honestly forgot about it for most of the book. There was also a lot of tension built up around the main antagonist that never went anywhere. The ending just sort of ... Fizzled out. There was also a lot of repetition in the explanations of law terms or why something was important.
Overall, I did enjoy it (as an adult), despite its flaws. It was a quick and light read and I plan on checking out the next book in the series.

An interesting book about a teenage boy who aspires to be a lawyer and often gives his friends legal advice. When the town’s biggest trial in recent history starts, Theo is excited, but he never anticipates the role he will play in it. This book is unbelievable in places, but is a good read. I recommend it to people who like courtroom dramas and / or the law.
