Paul is an extremely talented scientist. This is why he has been asked to join an expedition to the island of Flores in Indonesia. Paul is tasked with gathering some DNA from a pile of bones that the group found. Instantly, Paul knows something is different about the bones. However before Paul can solve the mystery, the expedition is shut down.

Paul and two other crew members go on the run. Later one goes missing, the other one is killed and Paul in the process loses an eye. Now, Paul is more then determined to uncover the truth.

I am left walking the fence on this one. On one hand I enjoyed the science element and mystery in this book but on the other hand I did not care for the stop and go action. I would get into this book and then it would slow down to conversation. For me I did not find the conversations between the bad guys to exciting. Even though I know these were the times when I was suppose to pick up on what Paul discovered and the big climax ending. For me, I never fully committed 100% to anyone but Paul. So for me it felt like the action and hype would pick up again whenever Paul was involved.

So to recap…Paul was great, the science fundamentals intriguing and kept things interesting, the action ok, and the ending alright. The ending came a little out of left field but don’t know if this was on purpose to hint that we have not seen the last of Paul? Maybe, maybe not. I would not mind seeing Paul again. This book is worth a look

This is one weird little alternate history. Although there are a LOT of loose ends that aren't tied up at the end, the initial premise is so unusual that it's worth reading: scientists have proven that the age of the earth is 5800 years, and that radio-carbon dating and such support that, as well as genetics. (Or have they??? There is more than one way to read their science.) Anyway, a fossil dig on the island of Flores has exposed bones of "hobbits" that may overthrow everything they think they know about the non-evolution of the human race. Neat touch: the bibliography at the end of all the "journal articles" cited in the book.

This book has a somewhat implausible premise,i.e. that the earth is only 6,000 years old, according to accepted scientific truth. A scientist is hired to go to an archaeological dig where ancient bones have been discovered. These bones may upset prevailing dogma because they may be more than 6,000 years old. When he tries to find out more, people try to kill him and those around him. He pursues the truth finding horrifying scientific experiments. The author has done a lot of research, showing understanding of various genetic diseases, including Cystic Fibrosis, of which I have some knowledge, since 2 family members have this disease.
The plot moves swiftly and I give it 3.5 stars(rounded up to 4) out of 5 stars. I read it in 3 days, a fast read.

I liked many of the concepts in this book, but I was wishing there was a little more exploration into the divergence of species, and potential ramifications. Overall a great read.

An interesting take on the history-adventure-science type of read, but a bit too draggy at bits and bogged down in the science ~ there were several pages I simply had to gloss over because my mind couldn't process the nuances of genetics (and really didn't care as much of it, from what I could tell, didn't impact my ability to follow the story.

As with many of the books in this genre, the ending is anti-climactic and rather abrupt.

I may try another of this author's books but I'm not rushing to do so.

Pretty interesting... what if science bowed to religion and made the science match the bible stories... Carbon dating proves the earth is 7000 years old etc...
