3.5 stars. This was pretty good for a debut novel! It was a little slow for my taste - more drama than thriller. A good read but largely forgettable.

Quick, enjoyable mystery. Surprising twist. Fun while it lasted.
Lisa is dealing with her hectic life one day at a time until her best friend Kate's daughter (and her daughter's best friend) is kidnapped and everyone blames her. This was a little slow in the middle, but it picked up more at the end with several twists that I didn't see coming. Though it's told in the perspectives of Lisa, the detective, and occasionally the kidnapper, I wish that we had gotten Kate's point of view. I think that the real issues at play in this book were very unique to the genre but were sort of glossed over. I would have liked some more development with them so that the reader could have gotten a clearer picture and the uniqueness of the book could have been focused on more.
Definitely a page turner - probably three and a half stars. One review said it was predictable but not for me!
This book was a Goodreads recommendation. It is very Gone Girl-esque. The characters are well drawn and the interactions between the not posh, not perfect Lisa Kallisto and the other mother, Kate, and her family, are well crafted. The dynamic between Lisa and Joe and the other, much more well off, members of their community was particularly well done. Lisa is a character that I could definitely relate to and I could imagine the horror of having someone else’s child disappear on your watch.
Two things made the resolution very obvious to me, the fact that it was recommended for fans of Gone Girl and a revelation made about one of the characters a little over the half way mark. Even with that I still found it a compelling page turner, I really wanted to get to the ending and see how it all turned out.
My main issue with the book is that the ending is only solved by “accident”, neither the police nor the protagonist really solve it. It is more like the reveal is “stumbled upon” by Lisa. There are also some strange side storylines that don’t really add to the main plot and don’t seem to serve a purpose. Overall, there is enough good here that I would read more by this author.

Quick review for a somewhat quick read. "Just What Kind of Mother Are You" pretty much falls under my library's recommended literature similar to Gillian Flynn ' s "Gone Girl" but I'd picked it up for the overarching mystery and inspiration behind it. It kept me reading avidly to see where the disappearance would go, though I honestly predicted what would happen early on and who the villain (s) turned out to be. I found most of the characters to be insufferable to follow (save for the detective, who was more than apt to call out people - I liked reading her POV the most though it wasn't featured as often.)
I'll admit it was a read that kept me guessing in places, though. Audiobook was very well narrated and that factored into me enjoying the overall read, but I felt a bit underwhelmed by the dashed off ending and that it really didn't dig as much into the overarching issues behind Kate ' s experience and the disappearance of her child.
Overall: 3/5 stars

this book started out promising. in fact, I was hooked on the first chapter. the good thing about this book is that it is a quick and easy read and it makes you want to keep on reading to see how the plot unfolds.
unfortunately when you actually get towards the end when the "mystery" is solved, you feel cheated. the story is just unbelievable and bizzare. there were many other things that the author put too much thought into it that doesn't contribute to the plot yes I mean I get that the dog afterwards contributed to finding the man but all that tiny details that don't matter was taking up too many pages of the book. and also
characters wise.. they are okay. I don't find them particularly endearing. I quite liked Jon. he must be my favorite throughout. I hated Alexa.
however I liked how the author switches the chapters among the characters point of view especially when it comes to the rapist's. (Lolita anyone?) creepy!
overall it was okay. recommend to anyone who likes a bit of mystery tossed in with family drama. but definitely don't expect a big plot twist or anything like that.
