i randomly picked this book up from my library and GOD am I glad i did!!!

it was just such a fun read agghhh it felt very nostalgic in the way that it was veryy fast-paced and easy to get through (you could easily read this in a day)

Of course, there were some spooky/creepy scenes and I lovedd it! Definitely gave me Goosebumps vibes. loveddd how there were a variety of fantastical characters and concepts introduced, many of which I’ve never heard of - so it was definitely refreshing to say the least
~ not me getting all giddy bc it reminded me of Outlander in that regard hahahah

i think its safe to say I’ll be continuing the series

I wasn’t sure whether I would like this book or not so I hesitated picking it up for ages. But I am so glad I finally read it! I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to continuing with the series.

I want to start this review off by saying that the ending was really good. The atmosphere and characters were so interesting. The plot has so much potential and there were moments where it got spooky. However, there are so many things left unanswered. There are pages devoted to trying to explain them but I felt like I finished reading it with more questions than answers.

The main "villain" Mr Morningside was so intriguing but by the end of the book I knew the same amount as when I started the book.

It has been set up for a second book which I would be interested to read and I hope it goes into more detail about the supernatural.

Loisa has never quite fit in anywhere, people are automatically mistrustful of her. She's been sent off to boarding school by her grandparents, only to later run from the school. When we first meet her, she is telling fortunes on the street in the hope to make enough coin to find food and shelter. She is approached by a curious old woman who give her some gold coinage, which Louisa used to try to buy some meat pies. The man running the stall doesn't believe she could earn such coins and accuses her of theivery, alerting nearby persons and assembling a mob to capture her. As Louisa is fleeing, the old woman reappears and tells her that she can bring her to a house where there's an available position for her. Louisa decides it to be a better option than risking the mob catching her, and so she follows the woman out of town and onward to this job opportunity. Once there she discovers that this is just any normal house or any regular job position. She plans to pilfer things from the house that she can then use to try to trade for food/passage/shelter. In her snooping, however, she gets more than expected. She comes into contact with a Resident of the house and tethers herself to the house by touching the ominous book in the attic. She wars with herself as to whether or not she should stay and even if she would be able to devise a way to escape. In the end, however, she remains at the house out of loyalty to her new friend and insatiable curiousity. High stakes are paid at the end and we are given an unresolved ending to lead us into the next in the series.
I know this book is meant to lead directly into the sequel, but it left everything feeling very unresolved. If this was a TV show, "To Be Coninued" would flash acress the screen at the end.
In saying that, however, I must say that I did actually quite enjoy this book. It was histroical fiction with a gothic theme, which I adore. I was afraid the book would lean too heavily on the gothuc side and slip into being cheesy and overdone, but there was a nice balance. The plot was intruiging and unique and I will definitely be reading the sequel.

I read the book twice, once when it came out and the second time right now. I remember enjoying it the first time because I happened to like discovering the MC's thoughts (because she doesn't take people's word for it and keeps believing in what she believes) and what was going on although not much answers were given throughout the book.

Second time reading in 2023, it was a mild read for me, still unique in its own way but still mild. I do still recommend anyone interested to read it. I just bought book 2 right now and am planning to finish the whole series till book 3. It seems to pick much more after book 1.

4.7 estrellitas.

Weird but good.

I had zero expectations when diving into House of Furies but when I saw it in hoopla, I just had to have it. This book was creepy, weird, and highly entertaining. I loved it. However, I will admit that I did kind of zone in and out during some parts of this book. I totally blame work because I was kind of in the zone while working on stuff and then I realized I was listening to a book.

Now after I finished this audio book I watched a creepy movie, I think it was called down a dark hall? Not quite sure about the title but it kind of reminded me about this book. Girls go to this school but during their stay they are kind of occupied by a ghost. They are trying to finish their work and in the end, the girls go so crazy that they die. Whether it’s suicide or not. So yeah, in a way it kind of reminded me about this book since people travel to this place to die (sort of).

Besides that, I wanted to like certain characters of this book but found I couldn’t. I am, however, intrigued enough to dive into the next book of this series. Just to see what’s going to happen next.

No. From a doctor that ate his daughter and carries a bag of bones around with him to weird book monsters to parents mating with the devil... just, no. Not my bag...

It was just okay. The plot was interesting enough, but just barely. Nothing against the book itself, I just think it wasn't my thing, not a read that really grabbed me or pulled me in to deeply. I just sat on the surface of this book letting it take me down its river rather than feeling like I could dive deep into it. Probably won't read the next one.
