I just couldn't get into this one. Edmundson wrapped up the overarching story of these three volumes about midway through and then the rest was devoted to a snapshot from the Secret Wars event with vaguely connecting flashbacks to an incident from Natasha's past. So it was pretty disjointed and anticlimatic. Plus I was just completely over Natasha telling us how she needs to atone and can't be around people and how she's a monster. Black Widow, you were hanging out with people like the Winter Soldier and Punisher and X-23 all up and down this shit. Natasha, you've met Kid Loki, right? Deadpool? Emma Frost? Elektra? Freaking Magneto, the Master of Magnetism (and sometimes murder)? How about you settle your assassin ass down a little bit and get with the fact that antiheroes are the fucking norm in the Marvel universe and do your job and make out with Daredevil on a boat if you want, I don't care. The art was still very, very pretty though.

This series was really underwhelming, unfortunately. The overall villian was pretty stupid in my opinion, and such a weird villain for Natasha (who’s a normal human (with the super soldier serum, obviously)) to have. And the way she defeated the villain was honestly pathetic. All this build up for absolutely, nothing to happen. The only issues I actually enjoyed were the last two, which were very unnecessary and not at all related to the plot of this story. They were flashback scenes to when Nat was still a KGB assassin for the Red Room, and they were easily the two best issues in here. Those two issues reminded me why I love Black Widow. She’s ruthless and she’s unapologetic abt it. Without those issues, this easily would have been a low two stars.

Anyways, this is definitely not a series I really enjoyed. The art was very beautiful though, and it’s really the only thing I can say I fully enjoyed throughout this story. The sketch mark & watercolor style is some of my favorite comic book art ever so I would read from this artist again. But I will not heavily recommend this series to any kind of Black Widow fan. Disappointed, but not surprised after reading the other two volumes /:

the art was still lovely but the story still doesn't quite match it. i did like the glimpse of baby natasha though! she clearly started riding the steely eyed determination train young. 3 stars

I really enjoyed this, but I agree with other reviewers that it felt rushed at times, but this could've been because there were crossover issues that I didn't read. I would've liked to see more development of Nat's relationships with the Avengers. Also, I think more could've been made of Chaos as a villain, but the possibility is set up at the end of the arc for the reappearance of Chaos.

I started to get a little fatigued of Edmonson writing Nat's inner angsty thoughts about being different and alone, but this author wallowing in the black side of spies and superhero vigilantes is a well-known hazard. I loved the flashbacks about Nat's beginnings as a Russian operative/assassin, though. It was great when Edmonson showed us Nat's conflict rather than telling it.

The final volume in the latest Black Widow series is one you won’t want to miss. Natasha wants answer and she’s got a list of whom to get them from. Will she finally get to the core of chaos or will it be too late? Can she still turn to S.H.I.E.L.D. or even The Avengers? Will she find out what happened to Isaiah?

I am so sad this was the last volume of this series! Okay, I know, I know that it has moved onto and into bigger things. I’m not sure they’re better, as I haven’t read any of where this story went yet. But, I sure loved where it ended (and started from).

I loved this series of 3 bind-ups that focused solely on Black Widow.
I love Natasha and think she is an incredibly fascinating character, so it was so cool and interesting to see more of her character away from the adventures and get a peak at what she does when she’s not saving the world.

I also very much love that Black Widow is a morally ambiguous character and still a hero. This is honestly my favorite thing about her and most likely the main reason I love her character so much. This series actually reminded me very much of Catwoman (my favorite anti-hero), and I liked that Black Widow’s character was explored in the same type of subtle yet intense way.

I really enjoyed this storyline and enjoyed the unfolding arc of this series. Edmondson’s storytelling is fluid, easy to follow, and engrossing. There was not one part of this story that I didn’t enjoy reading. I also enjoyed the cameos dropped into this volume. The few tossed in were great fun!

Phil Noto’s art is so stunning. I loved the muted colors and blurry lines. He adds a softness to an intense story. It’s very interesting to explore how the story and art come together in this comic (as well as the previous in the series) and to examine how they complement each other–perfecly, I might add. This duo clearly worked hard to bring fans a beautiful book.

There is not a thing about this story that I didn’t like. Even when there were lulls in the story, I found a beauty in them that was still present, making it impossible for me to dislike the scenes that were less action-packed.

I highly recommend this series to Marvel fans as well as Black Widow fans. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about a character that doesn’t find herself in the limelight often. Do yourself a favor and start and finish this series.
