I listened to this on Audiobook and it was calming and sometimes insightful, but felt a little more like Murakami was rambling. I know that was sort of the point of this book, but I guess I was expecting something with a little more... encouragement? I've been struggling to get my butt in gear lately, so I had high hopes and although Murakami managed to help me understand why I run, it didn't motivate me to get back in the game.

With that being said, I appreciate the way Murakami describes his running journey. It was interesting to recognize that I might have more in common with introverted runners than I thought.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I love the premise - the travel memoir style, the drive the author has for running, the authors personality, etc. But I found the book lacking any sort of storyline which made it difficult to stay engaged. Too much of the book was spent detailing the different marathons, more than the authors reflections on it. Maybe it’s because I’m not a runner, maybe runners would enjoy this detail more.

I can’t decide between a 4 or 5, something I never thought I’d say for a murakami book. Think I’m gonna settle on 4 stars bc he did consistently mention all the attractive, young girls he kept seeing on runs (he got married at 22 and is well into his 40s or so in the book). Thought he was gonna run after them and have sex with them for a hot sec; I am forever grateful he did not(as I’m sure the girls are too). Maybe his wife just doesn’t read his stuff. Maybe they have a clause abt this in their marriage contract idk. I genuinely don’t know what asscrack he pulled Norwegian Wood out of.

Either way, I appreciated all the shoutouts of Cambridge and the Charles. I miss Boston and running alongside the river. If you’re gonna read a Murakami, read this one. A lot of lessons abt life and it reads like a love letter to writing and running, both of which are activities I enjoy dearly.
