Oh god, the tiny suicidal violin player in my head was at it again so I did what I had to do... I threw this damn book across the room and put him out of his misery!
This is the second and LAST book I will ever read of Khaled Hosseini. The guy is more Eeyore than Eeyore! Everything that can go wrong does and then gets even worse. This book, like The Kite Runner, is ridiculously depressing. I don't think there has ever been a more overrated author.

Life in Afghanistan hasn't been normal for a long time. Being a 90's kid I have heard about the wars and had a rough idea that life wasn't easy there but never gave a thought about gender inequality.
"Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman."
Women have been through a very rough time all over the world. But in Afghanistan being a woman feels like a crime. Finishing the book was very hard for me because when you think finally now justice will be done to Mariam & Laila, Life would throw yet another obstacle for them.
I have so much respect for all Mariam and Laila living in every house in Afghanistan.
After the Taliban era, most of the orthodox rules have been lifted. Women are considered equal to men. But some Afghan women still follow old rules just because of cultural pressure.

It was so sad I was considering leaving the book in the middle so many times. I'm glad I didn't though, the ending was worth reading for. Broke me into fifty pieces and attached me back better than before.
mariam's death didn't just kill mariam, it killed me too. I hoped till the end she would live a happy life sometime, I'm glad she died in peace knowing she was loved though. And omg I did not expect tariq to come back. The letter from jalil added so much to the story.
