Rachel Lynn Solomon is a master at writing novels that feel so genuine and real. I felt that in I’LL MISS YOU WHEN I’M GONE, and I felt it in OUR YEAR OF MAYBE, too. I think a lot of it has to do with what my expectations will be versus what Solomon delivers. For example, on this story, Peter and Sophie are longtime best friends and Sophie believes if she gives Peter her kidney, he’ll realize he loves her. In that situation, some might ship them - yes, let them fall in love!! But that’s not what happens. That’s not the point of the story. It’s narrated by both of them, and it’s clear that things don’t match up. At the same time, the story still left me satisfied at the end. I liked reading from Peter’s point of view, as he is bisexual, and I also liked how the story explored toxic relationships and friendships. It’s something I wish I’d had when I was in high school. Looking forward to Solomon’s next novel.

Well written and heartbreaking story of first love. But the revelations about their own feelings and their relationship came only at the end of the novel, too late to explore them in a meaningful way.

Ahhhh the first tear jerker of 2019. Definitely going to need a mystery, fantasy, or a nice light rom-com because this effing broke me.

In all honesty I found this book completely shocking and not in a good way. It involved a girl who was in love with this guy who didn’t love her back and this guy just plays her as if she meant nothing to him. Now, I love and respect Rachel Lynn Solomon as an author, but I do not appreciate the many sexual innuendos and obsessions with having sex as a teen. Most teens, I would hope since I am one myself, do not think of sex all of the time like these characters seemed to. I do not really understand what the purpose of this novel is besides not falling in love with your best friend? This is definitely not anywhere near a top or even liked novel. This book highly disappointed me and I question how it was allowed to be published.
