This version is a tame version of this story.

The actually story is very sad and scary.

Hans Christian Andersen has a sick since of humor that can even scare adults.

But this version is more in line with the Disney version

Before this, the fairy tales I had read were all rewrites. While the originals are not the most interesting read, it was neat seeing how different authors changed them up.

Average rating: 4 stars exactly, but I enjoyed this reread 5 stars worth

I highly recommend this collection of Andersen’s fairy tales. Not only are the illustrations and interactive elements absolutely gorgeous and immersive, but they are a collection of his best and most iconic and most Andersen tales. It’s a selection of his most quintessential works, many of which you may recognize without expecting to. Man, I love Grimm’s fairy tales, but Andersen just has a way about his fairy tales that can’t be replicated. Where Grimms’ tales are darkly funny and magical, Andersen’s are warmer, sadder, and more fleshed out.

The Little Mermaid - 5 stars
The Nightingale - 5 stars
The Ugly Duckling - 4.5 stars
The Swineherd - 2 stars
The Tinder Box - 3 stars
The Princess and the Pea - 5 stars
The Emperor’s New Clothes - 3 stars
The Red Shoes - 3 stars
Thumbelina - 4 stars
The Steadfast Tin Soldier - 4.5 stars for nostalgia
The Little Match Girl - 4 stars
The Snow Queen - 5 stars

A definite keep to one day read to your children, it's beautiful design and little interactive features makes it a lovely addition to any bookshelf. I bought this when I was in Paris in the stunning Shakespeare and Company Bookshop so it held more meaning to me than if I picked it up from Waterstones, it's beauty and the fact it was a collection of fairytales drew me in to buy it.

My Favourite Fairytales (in order from best to 'worst'):
1. The Snow Queen
2. Thumbelina
3. The Princess and the Pea
4. The Little Mermaid
5. The Little Match Girl
6. The Nightingale
7. The Swineherd
8. Tinder Box
9. The Ugly Duckling
10. The Red Shoes
11. The Steadfast Tin Soldier
12. The Emperor's New Clothes

You can see all my reviews here: Books Are The New Black

I remember getting this book for my birthday, two years ago! I love all things mermaid and I was really excited for this one. I should have researched it because only about 50 pages are the story!! The rest of this book is various short stories.

The rest of the stories were just not that enjoyable. I felt bored a lot of times and just really confused on why some of these were chosen for this book.

The illustrations were amazing. I loved that there’s an interactive part to this book. Throughout it there’s a lot of art or little pop-ups that you can do to break up the stories. It’s really the best part about the book. It’s beautiful but I wish the words were too.

The interactive features and illustrations in this edition were lovely but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with the translation. It seemed too modern and simple and I’m not convinced it was a very good translation considering the time these stories were originally written. Nonetheless, my favourite stories were The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and Thumbelina.
