Me hizo aprender y pensar, reflexionar...

while i didn’t think the first book needed a sequel at all, i was so happy to be back with these lovely characters. there is such a tenderness in this story that makes me so so emotional. i will always hold ari and dante so close to my heart. this one was definitely not as good as the first, which is now one of my favorite books of all time, but it held the same qualities i loved about the first one.

"The world would be a better place if everyone did more thinking and less talking. There might be a lot less hatred."
You can't help yourself but rethink your whole life and the way this world works when you read this book.
I absolutely fell in love with every character in this book. You definitely notice that Benjamin Alire Saenz is a poet. He has a very unique and so beautiful way of writing. A lot of the times I found myself crying because of his choice of words. It was a very thought out sequel.
Jamie's death was the only part of the book that completely killed me inside and forced me to put the book away. When I read Ari's speach at his father's funeral I broke down for good.
I am not sure if I am satisfied with the ending of the book. I absolutely have mixed feelings about the fast pace of Ari's time in Paris.
Other than that I can say that I very much enjoyed the book, maybe not as much as the first one but it was even more poetic.
I will love Ari, Dante and their families and chosen family forever and will think about them for a long time

I met Aristotle and Dante more than 10 years ago, during a literature class in college. They came along at a time when I was questioning my sexuality and helped me understand myself. Now, as an openly queer mom of two, reading this book was like visiting with old friends. I felt every emotion imaginable. Alire Sáenz captures life’s biggest questions and boils them down into a handful of teenagers. The teenager left in me giggled and remembered. The mom in me tsked, rolled her eyes, and sobbed. I can not imagine a better book— one that truly spans the ages.
While I did enjoy this book, my opinion on some of the content and the author himself have taken a turn in the past few days. Hearing about the authors transphobia and the transphobic elements that I missed in both novels was quite upsetting. I hadn't noticed these elements before hand because I was invested in the story but looking back, these elements definitely made me a bit uncomfortable. I will be keeping the 4 star rating because I did enjoy the story, however this is definitely some important information to keep in mind before picking up the books.
Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World is a story of love, friendship, family and grief. But mostly, it is a story of finding your place in the world and growing as a person.
As far as sequels go, this one was was quite good. One of my favourite elements was seeing Ari's development as a character throughout the story. Being able to read about him building and strengthening his relationship with his friends, his parents, and Dante was something that I think was very important. I loved being able to see more of the other characters throughout the story as well as being able to see Ari start to focus on people other than himself.
I'm a sucker for established relationships which I think is why I preferred this to the first book. When it comes to romance novels or stories with a focus on relationships, I always love to know what the characters get up to after having gotten together, so it was really nice to see how Ari and Dante spent their summer together and their school yer afterwards. I will also say that I love books that make me cry and this made me sob at 3am, so its safe to say I enjoyed it. Plus, the writing style was still as beautiful as ever.
The ending felt a bit abrupt but I think that it still worked well in context of the characters. I won't go into anymore details to avoid spoilers, but for such a long book, I feel like the ending could've used a couple more pages to be fully fleshed out.
I did enjoy this, and I know a lot of people have been anticipating this for a long time, so I can't say don't read it, however please be aware of the issues surrounding these books and the author before going in.

I hesitated for quite a while before reading this book, since the first book is very dear to me. But I'm glad I did end up reading the sequel. It doesn't have quite the same charm as the first book but it was nice to see Ari grow and learn to accept himself. I also felt like this book focused more on Ari than Dante. Which is also good of course but not what I expected, so that disappointed me a bit. Some parts did drag on for a bit too long and felt a bit boring but besides that it was nice to read about these boys again :)
