California Demon by Julie Kenner

Second installment in the series, this one pretty much carrying on from where the first one ended. Quick read, don't have to think too deeply about. I like Kate, the main character; I think if I moved to San Diablo we'd get along just fine. Ms. Kenner makes her very sympathetic dealing with real "mommy" issues, but she's imperfect enough not to put the reader off. Some of the secondary characters felt a bit shortchanged this time around, Cutter, Eddie and Father Ben in particular. And the introduction of David Long has interesting possibilities.

The writing itself has some issues with repetition. We get that she loves her family, she's not going to let anything happen to them, and that anytime the demon she's fighting starts to get the upper hand, she'll realize that she can't let them win because she can't die and leave her family. I recognize that there are only so many ways to say that, but it does get old after a while.

Wonder how much longer she can/should keep it a secret from Stuart, though...guess I'll have to read the next one to find out!

There's something I find enjoyable about tongue-in-cheek horror stories, and this is one of the best series in that category, with the possible exception of Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series. The retired demon hunter Kate Connor moved to a quiet little town to raise her kids in peace and become the perfect suburban wife. Of course, the demons aren't about to let her live in peace, and Kate must dig out those old demon-destroying tools to make California safe.

I'm not sure how to classify this series, but it sure is fun! I really liked this one, with the tension developing between all of Kate's baggage from her past and the intense demands of the present. The demons are back and they have their sites set on her daughter's high school. Add a mysterious stranger, a hot surfer dude, and her daughter's romantic crisis and things are pretty busy. But that's only half of the story. So much fun.

I am really trying to enjoy this series but I don't know if it is the writing or me.

This is such a fun series. I keep finding myself wondering what Kate Connor is up to. I love the action scenes interspersed with mom moments. Kate is a badass demon hunter,  but she's a flawed person full of grief and guilt and love.  Kate's inner monologue is funny and the tension of secrets is a good mix. She has just enough people on her side so she's not alone,  but the majority of the world doesn't know about her job so it's fun to see her skirt around things.

Cute. Some of the writing is so spot-on funny that you can't help but laugh. This is not the best series I have ever read, but it is entertaining and worth the read. Very excited to read the next one and find out what happens with the demons and the characters
Spoilerespecially David/Eric!

Demon hunting soccer mom ahoy! The writing is still a little shabby, but this was still a fun, quick read.

Funny and light hearted read but I suspect the others in the series are going to be much of the same plot.

I really enjoy this series. I'm glad Kate is getting around to telling her loved ones about her life. Just curious when she's gonna tell her husband. I bet he will turn out to be a demon after that crash he had in book one. Then she will get with David/Eric. I will certainly be reading the next one!

I liked this book better than the first in the series, partly because the introduction is done and Kate Connor is fighting demons from the start, and partly from the addition of David Long as a mysteriously familiar high school teacher. In [book: California Demon], demons have arrived in San Diablo in search of a mysterious book, and Kate's daughter Allie is helping with a Surf Team fundraiser. Could the two events be related? These books aren't quite "Buffy as a soccer mom," as one reviewer claimed, but they are pretty good.
