Love this book. Good story.

It's been awhile since I was reading Caldecott's so it's nice to be back to them. With this one I'm reminded that the range of Caldecott awards are much wider than just simple children's picture books with great art. This book is the autobiography of one musician, not someone I'd ever heard of. But with well executed vivid art and a higher level of language than I normally expect from a picture book, the author was brought to life. Almost made me want to listen to jazz.

Find a read-along version that has the music in the middle of it.

More so a motivational book than a story, but very atmospheric.

trombone shorty is an autobiography written by troy “trombone shorty” andrews about his time growing up in new orleans and how music was a major influence in his life

apart from the story, i really, really liked the illustrations done by bryan collier. there are some that use real images interspersed with illustration and i just think that’s neat

i would recommend this to anyone interested in learning about trombone shorty as this is a good starting point

This picture book:
- made me really excited to share it with kids
- I'm really hoping there is a shiny sticker on it come January 2016

I don't know why I waited so long to read this one. It's fabulous! The autobiographical story itself is sweet and inspiring. A story of perseverance, ingenuity, dedication, and hope. I can see why the illustrations led to a Caldecott Honor & Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award recognition - the collage style helps the reader feel the inclusive community, and the illustrator's note at the end adds a depth of understanding to the visual choices and motifs of the musical elements that adds to the text. Love this book - a must share!

Troy Andrews grew up around music. In his hometown of New Orleans, he heard music everywhere he went and he longed to add to the music. When he was just four years old, Troy took up the trombone - an instrument bigger than he was! - and his brother started calling him TROMBONE SHORTY. Troy loved music, so it was easy for him to practice, and he kept his trombone with him all the time, even falling asleep with it sometimes. He went on to perform with some of the most famous bands around. He even played for President Obama.

This is a fun, musical picture book biography.
