3 for the writing, 4 for the characters. I loved Josh, prickly grump and all. I loved the nicknames he gave to other characters. I loved Gabe. There were some editing and writing errors that distracted me but overall, I thought it was a cute book and the sex was hot.

Ok, this was wonderful. An excellent blend of romance and mystery, with cute small town antics thrown in.

This is a great story with great characters, however it's awkwardly and badly written and desperately needs a proofreader/editor. There are so many embarrassing mistakes in the writing and overall the writing is very immature. I was super disappointed because I've read her other stuff and it was great. I just cannot continue this series though.

To much love wip lash. I only made it to about 55 pages but I already can't stand it. I don't expect myself to get though whole series.

Stylist Josh Rohan and detective Gabe Wyatt had a less than auspicious first meeting when Josh's neighbour and friend is murdered. Josh overhears Gabe doing some not very wise remarks to his partner, and he is quick to let him know that he is NOT amused.

That doesn't mean that Josh is indifferent to the detective's looks. Au contraire! But the animosity is running higher than the lust, so he trash any and all the attempts done by Gabe to apologize. And it kind of makes an ass of himself in the process.

Which leads to them finally giving in into the lust, but... nope, they are not in a relationship. Not at all. And that's one of the things I liked most (the other is Josh's dirty, dirty parrot :P): their emotional connection comes slowly; they fight, they run (well, mostly Josh runs), they come back and then, fight again. And all the while, this... thing between them is growing.

But is not only the romance that is wonderful, the mystery is also great and kept me really interested all along.

And the characters! they are all fantastic! I'm particularly fond of Gabe's partner, but the people at the beauty saloon are all funny and lovely.

So, yes, I went right for book 2, of course :P

Title: Dyeing to be Loved
Author: Aimee Ann Walker
Series: Curl Up and Dye Mysteries
Genre: MM Romantic Suspense

Gabe is the sexy local detective, and Josh is the eccentric owner of the salon, Curl Up and Dye. After getting off to a rough start fraught with misunderstandings, the two are now thrown together again when a local figure and good friend of Josh’s is killed… and Josh seems to be a prime suspect.

I was immediately turned off by the implication that I had missed a prior connection/interaction between the two characters. Apparently is was published in a romance anthology that I didn’t bother looking up once I realized that this book would rehash the prior story anyway, but it was annoying nonetheless.
Spoiler Josh meets Gabe when a friend of his is murdered, and he overhears Gabe tell his friend that Josh is too feminine for him. Josh takes it badly to say the least. They later meet at a club and end up having sex, only for Josh to withdraw and Gabe to realize he was being narrow minded on what his type really is.

That being said, I was intrigued enough by the premise to keep going - mainly because of Gabe. Here was this guy who totally owned that he had been a narrow minded jerk, admitted it to Josh, and then openly pursued him.

“I hurt your feelings and I am sorry for it. I’m not going to bullshit you by pretending I wasn’t going to say it or that I didn’t mean it at the time, because I did. That’s not what I was going to apologize about.”Kudos for honesty.
“Then what are you sorry for?” I asked, tilting my head to the side in puzzlement.
[...] “For being narrow-minded”.

Yet Josh still resisted - mostly out of fear of being hurt it seemed. But here was was Gabe, being charming and smooth, showing every hint of being for real, and Josh kept jumping to conclusions, getting snippy, and pushing Gabe away. Their angry-attraction banter was funny and entertaining most of the time, but I was just as disappointed in how Josh treated him throughout most of the book. Just to give an example, Gabe gets made when he thinks that Josh purposely kept information from him regarding the case that he is working on, and subsequently calls Josh “high-drama”. Josh gets so upset, he throw a hissy fit, kicks Gabe out, and spend a week in Florida only to realize that he did in fact overreact. Gahhhh.

The murder-mystery aspect of the story was decent - a whodunnit with an unexpected perpetrator at the end. It was just that with all the emotional drama going back and forth, a lot of the time I forgot there was a mystery plot going on in the background.

Overall, I can’t say I’m in a rush to read the next one, but I would give it a shot, hoping for some more stable characters in the future, since the dialogue and humor of this book were enough to make me keep looking towards this author’s work.

Well! Well!

Surprise!

description

This is my first book by this author and sure won’t be the last I liked it.

This is the story of Gabe the detective and Josh the salonist. The story starts with a murder mystery that brings these two together. The start is not a smooth one, they start of as enemies who enjoy some hot scorching sex to lovers who enjoy cute moments together.

I Loved

-Gabe and Josh, I felt their connection from the start. Josh could be frustrating at times, but I understood his reservations.

-The writing, the plot flowed nicely, it was not OTT and there was balance between the mystery and the love story, and I was glad I did not know the unsub, this made the mystery part enjoyable.

-The supporting characters which include Josh’s friends Chazz and Meredith, Gabe’s partner Adrian and his wife.

-I loved the small town setting and its gossip. I would love to visit Josh’s salon.

I have discovered one of my major pet peeves is unnecessary miscommunication, there was none here when they argued and disagreed they talked it out like adults. I loved that.

It was amazing to me how much things could change after a few sentences were exchanged. It wasn't like Gabe and I sat on my couch and divulged every feeling we'd ever had. We told each other exactly how we felt about the argument we had and talked about how we could avoid it in the future.

Keep you coming back for more

I want sure about this book at first but as I like whodunnits I thought there wasn't much to lose. Boy was I glad I did, fiesty Josh starts dragging you in and determined Gabe doesn't let you go. Their relationship and the ups and downs is a joy to watch flourish and has a nice since of reality.

The only poor part I found was their previous history. It wad written much like there was another book out there that was the first in the series instead of this and I kept feeling like I had missed something. Thankfully it wasn't enough to put me off the book or jar me too much as I read it.
