Josh was ok, after the reviews I was afraid he was OTT drama queen, but no, definitely a king)
The story was fine, the romance was fine. 3,5 stars fine for me.

I doubt I would have read this until the end, but it was fun to listen to while putting way too much IKEA furniture together.

Reread/relisten same rating of 3 stars

Okay this second read of the book I enjoyed it a lot more than the first time, I was still annoyed at how Josh would push Gabe away all the time. But I hear the series gets better so I wanted to start again!

Now on to book two!

3 stars... maybe closer to 2.5 honestly..

The beginning of the book hooked me in, and unfortunately it lost some of that initial spark as I continued haha

If there was a theme song for this book it would be “Hot N’ Cold” by Katy Perry. I swear it felt like whiplash with Josh pushing Gabe away and getting him back... and by getting him back I mean just getting him back in his pants, they didn’t really feel as if they had a relationship more than sex... I didn’t feel the connection between them which I am bummed about. It would show up occasionally but then go away when josh over reacted, when he thought he didn’t but we all know he did...

Overall it was okay, not sure if I will continue the series even though it kinda ends in a cliffhangerish..

DNF. The copy I had seems to include the prequel short story. At least, reading other reviews, I now realise that it is what the first 30ish pages of the book are. But within the actual book, it was presented as just the starting of the book. At around 30 pages in, the story ends. There is a copyright notice! And I thought the book was over.

Then I realised there were a good 200+ pages to go, scrolled a few more pages in, and discovered the book starts again from another POV? There is no notice that this is a new book/story, just a new chapter heading.

It was very confusing to read, and by the time I'd worked it out (i.e.: when I came to goodreads), I was just over it and had returned it to KU and got something else.

Stylist Josh Rohan and detective Gabe Wyatt had a less than auspicious first meeting when Josh's neighbour and friend is murdered. Josh overhears Gabe doing some not very wise remarks to his partner, and he is quick to let him know that he is NOT amused.

That doesn't mean that Josh is indifferent to the detective's looks. Au contraire! But the animosity is running higher than the lust, so he trash any and all the attempts done by Gabe to apologize. And it kind of makes an ass of himself in the process.

Which leads to them finally giving in into the lust, but... nope, they are not in a relationship. Not at all. And that's one of the things I liked most (the other is Josh's dirty, dirty parrot :P): their emotional connection comes slowly; they fight, they run (well, mostly Josh runs), they come back and then, fight again. And all the while, this... thing between them is growing.

But is not only the romance that is wonderful, the mystery is also great and kept me really interested all along.

And the characters! they are all fantastic! I'm particularly fond of Gabe's partner, but the people at the beauty saloon are all funny and lovely.

So, yes, I went right for book 2, of course :P

This is the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read the revised book which includes the prequel "Fatal Reaction" as a prologue. It was very helpful to read the story in order. I liked Gabriel Wyatt and Josh "Jazz" Roman. Their reaction to each other caused each of them to be off balance. But, I appreciated that Gabe decided he wanted to try to see where they could go together. He understood that Josh had been hurt in the past and he was quietly persistent. I absolutely loved that Gabe forced them to sit down and talk so they could figure out how to deal with what future land mines would come up. The mystery in the story was interesting and the conclusion to that was pleasantly surprising. I will definitely be reading this series.

Entertaining start to a new series

I really enjoyed this book and the introduction of Gabe and Josh as well as the secondary characters in their world. The mystery is intriguing and the red herrings are well done. There are two big downsides that I found annoying while I was reading, hence the four star review. First, the "will they or won't they" drags on for too long and the hurdles that Josh throws up become annoying. Secondly, there are several references to Josh's past experiences which we are led to believe cause him to be so reticent but we are never given any more information. It annoys me to no end when authors throw things and then just leave them there. As for the resolution to the murder mystery it was only half satisfying...it made sense for one victim but not really for the other.

Overall a very good book and I'll keep reading the series. Strongly encourage you to read the short story prequel on the author's website first as a lot of what happens here will be clearer.
