The book has several things to recommend it. The Audio edition which i used is very well done and certainly portrays the setting and the characterisation well. The concept of moving Henry VIII and his wives to the modern day schoolboy and his girlfriends was a really good idea and worked well. There were times when the "shrillness" of the characters annoyed me but it was true to the storyline. I felt it was a bit protracted and could have been told in less pages.

I liked the premise of this book- I just felt it was a little long and repetitive. That being said- if you have a reader who:
A) can’t get enough of Henry VIII and the women in his life,
B) loves historical fiction set in modern times,
C) just likes to dig in to a juicy soap opera with an expansive cast and an amusing narrator
D) all of the above!
Then this may be the book for them!

Not gonna lie...I wasn’t sure I was gonna like this when I started reading it. Not because it didn’t interest me, thats why I bought the book to begin with. The writing style was a bit weird and it left me confused a lot in the first fifty or so pages. But I ended up liking it a lot. Again I love retellings, so this was right up my alley. My favorite thing to do while reading this was looking up all of the character names and finding out that 99% of them were actually related to people in King Henry VIII life. I don’t know I found it really cool. And I really learned to love Cleves’ voice throughout the book too. It was really fun to read, and even though I knew the general story of Henry before reading it I still found myself on the edge of my seat and second guessing everything. I ended up loving it!

Let me start by saying I would (and no doubt will) read it again a dozen times. I’ve been looking for some really good contemps to get me out of this weird struggle I’ve had getting into them lately. NO TROUBLE GETTING INTO THIS ONE. Just enough touches of humor balanced with the murder-y vibes to make it impossible to put down. Some of the moments felt like they were trying a tad too hard but I overall really enjoyed where this story went. And, I mean, you can’t go wrong with a main character like Cleves. You just can’t.

Couldn't finish it - trying to stick Henry VIII characters in a modern setting, but not sticking to their actual stories was weird. Anne of Cleves as his best friend?? Katherine mysteriously dead?

I flew through the first half, it nearly lost me in the middle, but I pulled through and enjoyed the ending. As a SIX the Musical fan, definitely worth reading!

There’s nothing I hate more than dnfing but I just couldn’t with this book.
I read half of it but it pissed me off and it was just so annoying I had to put it down.
