This is a book-lover's dream-come-true. Set in San Francisco, with lots of literary references and puzzles to solve, a girl and a boy unravel a mystery with higher stakes than they had imagined. Exciting, clean (no sex-drugs-gore), it's perfect for kids who liked "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The Westing Game", or the Mysterious Benedict Society series.

*I was one of the lucky librarians who received three free copies of this book - two to hide in San Francisco for book scavengers to find, one to read and pass along. I love being part of the game, and love even more the way kids' eyes light up when I tell them about it!

Book Scavenging is basically geocaching, but for books. Add ciphers as clues and you have a pretty amazing game! Through playing this game, the characters stumble upon a different bookish treasure hunt, but soon discover there are others after the treasure who will go to dangerous extremes to find it.

This is a fun, clean, middle grade read, but I loved that there are also some pretty great lessons in it as well. You could have many good discussions about friendship, family dynamics, and internet safety after reading this book with your kids.

CC: guns, adults following and threatening/intimidating kids, bullying, kids run around all over the city with very little adult supervision

If I was 12 years old this would have been a five star read, no questions asked! It was so interesting and intriguing! Such an enjoyable read. This book contains mystery, suspense, code breaking and a scavenger hunt! It also touches on the value and importance of friendship and family. Loved this middle grade!

I really wish Book Scavenger was a real game. This is a perfect book for literature lovers. I'd love to use this as a read aloud and teach students about ciphers to go along with it. Overall, it's a great middle grade read, especially for fans of Escape from Lemoncello's Library.

I really liked "Book Scavenger." I thought the premise was clever. Scouring cities searching for books sounds like my kind of game. I loved her references to other books. I love when authors help remind me of books I've read or want to read. I liked that she threw in some red herrings. The plot line was cute, but really not believable.

There was so much to love about this middle grade novel. Our whole family enjoyed listening to the audiobook, and my son with a prominent cowlick has now named it Steve Jr., inspired by James's name for his. What kept this book at 4 stars instead of 5 for me: some plot points were reiterated/reviewed more times than necessary but in other places the plot had some gaps (what happens with Mr. Quisling?), and the gun violence (both actual and threatened) felt gratuitous -- you can have intrigue/suspense/danger without actual guns.

I loved this book! It has so much to offer and the entire concept of a world wide book scavenger hunt is so intriguing.

Great fun! I think it was a touch too long and dragged a bit but it was a sweet story.
