Felt like the ending didn’t wrap up all the mini plots very well.

Wonderful book by one of my all time favourites. Great story, slightly confusing when starting part two, but all becomes clear as characters progress. Utterly uplifting with great ending.

I, like many, found the ending very confusing...did Celia have a breakdown? Why was Guy disgusted?

Also, how many years passed between the 1950s and "present day" England? I thought Lottie's daughter was 35.... Wouldn't that mean only 35 years had passed...making it 1985 or 1990? That was confusing...Lottie and her contemporaries would've been only mid-50s or 60 tops? There are a lot of details I didn't appreciate... I like that the author didn't spell everything out for us (because we're an intelligent lot, right?), but it wasn't her best work...

This is the first book I've read by Jojo Moyes and I quite enjoyed it. I did get a bit annoyed when the story changed from the characters it started with to a whole new set and many years later as I wanted to know what happened but it was explained in part later on in the book. All in all I'd definitely give this author another try.

It's interesting to read Jojo Moyes' earlier work - while still good, it also really clear that she hit her stride in the past five years. Read this one when you've read all of her new stuff and are looking for more Jojo; it's good but not amazing like Me Before You or The Girl You Left Behind.

Well, I am now a Jojo Moyes completist, at least for books written to date. Finally worked my way through the back catalog of books. Just wish that this one was better. Granted I think it was her second novel so I guess she was still finding her way.

This ranks somewhere between 2-3 stars for me. I’m learning towards three because even though a good portion of the plot is idiotic, I still liked most of the characters and felt compelled to keep reading even though it was easy to see how it would turn out.

The earlier story set in the 1950’s is where I struggled the most: a character falling in love at first sight (hate that), messy direction, and some obvious turns. I think we are supposed to feel sympathetic towards Lottie but it was hard to do.

The portion set in the 2000’s was better though it felt like it was relying on a lot of stereotypes.

Love this author - very similar in style and content to Kate Morton, who is my favourite at the moment. Lottie is an evacuee ward who moves in with a well-off but dysfunctional family in a British seaside town. While technically best friends with the daughter of her age - Celia - they are opposites and end up falling for the same man, who Lottie sleeps with and becomes pregnant to. The second part of the story occurs 40 years later when the art house Arcadia is redeveloped as a trendy bar and hotel, and newly single and new mother Daisy moves to town and learns the secrets of the house. I would have loved more of the original story - Joe and Guy, and the disconnected parents, and what happened to Celia and Guy, but I'm such a sucker for the separate stories becoming intertwined. Lovely writing.
