Not good. It's a Young Adult book about boring Senate politics. What Young Adult wants to read about that? If shallow and offers little insight into Padme's character. Any reader that suggest this book sheds light on who Padme is intellectually dishonest. The reader knows more about her dresses and hair than her character.
Credit to Kate for trying to explain why Padme (badly) presents herself in the films with weird voice cadences and 'accents.' It's just weak, though.
Like The Phantom Menace, way too much time is spent on boring Senatorial minutia. And, as noted above, dresses and hair styles.
I was hoping for more. What we get is a boring, shallow read with free highlights. This book offers no adventure, no excitement. It has no flash or glitz. I cannot recommend this book. It does not offer anything noteworthy to the Star Wars saga.

This is a must read for any Padmé fan.
This is a beautiful story that shows Padmés transition from Queen to Senator.
It was great to be able to explore the character of Padmé, outside of the context of Anakin Skywalker and his story.
This book just aids in building Padmé as a character and shows just how smart, adaptable and strong this character is.
I love that we get to see and experience Padmés relationships with her handmaidens and guards. This book greatly develops each one of the handmaidens and guards, which is brilliant. Especially Sabé. These background characters are developed into important 3D characters. Who have stories of their own.
We get to see Padmé build friendships and partnerships with key senators like Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, Mina Bonteri and Clovis.
We also get to learn more about Naboo and Naboo culture. As some who loves the planet of Naboo. It was great to see the reasons and customs behind certain things. An example the Queens wardrobe.
I also love that we get to see how much respect Padmé had for Qui Gon Jin. We also are told that Naboo see Qui Gon as a hero. I thought these were nice touches. It was also get to see that the events of Ep1 had an effect on Padmé after her terms as Queen were up.
This book greatly integrates with the movies and clone wars animated show. Continuity it key!!!
Do not go into this book expecting an action pack adventure. This book revolves a lot around politics and the political world of Star Wars. I don’t mind this as I love leaning more about the political structure of the republic.
Definitely recommend.

This is exactly the Padme story i needed. The epilogue made me tear up. Ugh can we get another book about Padme. I’m in love with the prequel era✨

For anyone who has ever wanted more of Padmé, or just more of the women of Star Wars in general, I wholeheartedly recommend this!
The book gives a new and insightful life to not only Padmé, but to her handmaidens as well and the strong connections and love that they share, finally making them actually characters instead of just robes in the background. It was super interesting to get the chance to look more into the inner workings of their roles (getting to see more about the decoy maneuver was a highlight!) and how they had to change alongside Padmé as she transitions from queen to senator.
Getting to follow Padmé herself was a treat. I absolutely loved the look it gave us into her, for the most part, untold story. Everything was so grounded in the already established world of Star Wars, but the book does such a great job of standing on its own that at moments that it can almost make you forget what’s coming in her story. Padmé is such a strong and unrelenting character, and this book showcases that while also never sacrificing her good or the ideals she stands for, even during the moments she doubts them herself. That is something that I think is truly the backbone of the story, keeping everything true to Padmé as she navigates and adapts to the new world she’s been thrown into.
Overall, the book is charming and filled with all the drama and politics you’d expect from Star Wars! There are even some sweet moments that I was super excited to see like the beginnings of her friendship with Bail, and Artoo making his appearances as well! I was also super drawn to the way Padmé thinks about Anakin throughout the novel. It’s subtle and she never directly names him, even in her mind, but whenever she does reference him (or the necklace her gave her) it’s always with so much fondness and care that you can’t help but smile.
There are some instances where the writing makes it a little difficult to keep track of whose narrating the chapter, but aside from that it is a fun and interesting read. A true gift to Padmé fans!
I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on the next book in this series!

One sentence (if you don't want to read all of my review)s: While this book is not necessarily needed to understand the canon and overall world of Star Wars, it is an enjoyable and quick read that will help enrich the personalities of characters that previously did not have much.

This book is what every fan of Padme needs in their life. This book takes place following the years that Padme spends as queen of Naboo as she transitions into a senator. In the movies, it is so easy to forget that she is a person who has the ability to make mistakes. This story builds on that and shows how becoming a senator was not the easiest process for her and some of the challenges she went through. The deep dive into who the handmaidens are is an amazing way to build on these invisible figures, despite the fact that they were not even said in the movies, you will leave this book knowing the names of every handmaiden and caring about them. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it is Padme when she is written by a woman. Which, I am aware that non-women are able to write female characters well, there is just a special something that E.K. brings because of the perspective she has on that. She took a character that I really enjoyed (Padme) and made it so that I bring her up almost every time I discuss Star Wars. While this book is not necessarily needed to understand the canon and overall world of Star Wars, it is an enjoyable and quick read that will help enrich the personalities of characters that previously did not have much.
Thank you E.K.!

Not exactly my style, but man oh man do I love Padme Amidala. Brilliant, political, and engrossing. Def gonna read the second one at some point!
4.5 stars and rounding down, though that doesn't take away from the fact that I absolutely loved this book. From getting insight into Padme's life to meeting her handmaidens, retconing some of the directorial choices of Phantom Menace, and delving into the politics of Naboo and the senate, this was such a delight to read. The only reason why I'm rounding down is that I found the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic and rushed, though that might be because this is a bridge between stories we know (the book spans a bit of the gap between Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones).
adventurous
slow-paced
Definitely enjoying spending more time with Padmé and Sabé, and the final scene of the novel is touching. However, I found myself wishing for a more coherent plot. The storyline meanders without a compelling central conflict, and spends too much time on peripheral characters and small scale galactic politics. Yet, Padmé is still an awesome character worth spending time with, especially as a role model for younger readers.
If you enjoyed Bloodline, this one will be a fun ride too because POLITICS. :D Also badass Star Wars women. I really enjoyed listening to the voice of Padme from The Clone Wars read the audiobook.
