Weirdly I think I like the show better than the book.

A light and enjoyable romp of a regency romance. I really enjoyed the characters, particularly protagonists Simon and Daphne. The character building with Simon in the first half was particularly well done. There are historical inaccuracies that I can’t help but find glaring—there’s no question this book was written both well after regency period (in the 90s) but also contains some sexism and questionable sexual situations that feel dated given our healthier standards today around consent etc. Overall I look forward to watching the show and continuing the series—I hear this book one is the weakest in the series, so that’s promising.

It what all the components of a perfect lighthearted romance read! I really couldn’t have asked for more.

WARNING: the end of this book has a second epilogue/novella which seems to give away a LOT of the future relationships of the other siblings. I'm not sure how much of the future books will make the final relationships a surprise, but I think it's a little unfair for them to be added so soon. Didn't change how much I like this book.

I wish I'd read this before watching the Netflix show. It was a very nice book, but it's missing what I loved the most from the show which means all I thought throughout reading it was about those missing items. But it's a sweet book and a quick read. Quinn has a great knack for slowing down and speeding up time that has been missing from a number of other books I've read lately. I'll be reading the other books happily.

I really didn't liked the scene in which Daphne rapes Simon. This could've been done otherwise.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I felt the characters had interesting depths that weren't well explored and in the end it felt too tidy.

Let me preface this with: I do not usually read regency or period romances. I'm a strictly contemporary gal, and this might be why I had trouble with this.
The first half, I was enjoying it. Sure, there was misogyny, but it was dealt with well since that was the time for it. Quinn did a brilliant job balancing a strong heroine and the time period. Simon and Daphne had brilliant banter and there was a lot of sexual tension.
But then... **SPOILERS** the duel and the marriage all happened at the halfway point and I was like... What are we going to do with the next 6 hours? Is this going to be 6 hours of unnecessary angst? The answer is yes. And while I hate unnecessary angst, I could have overlooked it because I liked the couple. But then... The whole non consent plot. For both Daphne and Simon, each character did awful things to each other in a relationship, and I spent the last half of the book wanting to scrub my skin off. I'm not sure I'm in the mood to read another regency romance after this.
