If you’re here thanks to the Netflix show, you could probably skip this book. It’s much more narrow in scope and Daphne is less likable in a few ways (one hidden under the spoiler) and the rest of the family is obviously not fleshed out yet since this is the first book. I like the way the show combines storylines but I am going to the books another two or three tries before shelveing them in my recycle bin.rbookish's review against another edition

I wish I'd read this before watching the Netflix show. It was a very nice book, but it's missing what I loved the most from the show which means all I thought throughout reading it was about those missing items. But it's a sweet book and a quick read. Quinn has a great knack for slowing down and speeding up time that has been missing from a number of other books I've read lately. I'll be reading the other books happily.

The first half, I was enjoying it. Sure, there was misogyny, but it was dealt with well since that was the time for it. Quinn did a brilliant job balancing a strong heroine and the time period. Simon and Daphne had brilliant banter and there was a lot of sexual tension.
But then... **SPOILERS** the duel and the marriage all happened at the halfway point and I was like... What are we going to do with the next 6 hours? Is this going to be 6 hours of unnecessary angst? The answer is yes. And while I hate unnecessary angst, I could have overlooked it because I liked the couple. But then... The whole non consent plot. For both Daphne and Simon, each character did awful things to each other in a relationship, and I spent the last half of the book wanting to scrub my skin off. I'm not sure I'm in the mood to read another regency romance after this.
