the erins really invented mapleshade and then said "let's inject her into everything we've already written"

also, if tigerclaw hates non clan-born cats so much, why's he so obsessed with blackfoot & russetfur, etc.? he has no issues taking help from rogues/loners, but he draws the line at kittypets! i've decided he has daddy issues because of pinestar leaving the clan for kittypets, but you'd think that would make him like kittypets-turned-clan-cat more for seeing how "soft" a life it is or whatever.

anyway i enjoyed reading about how exactly tigerclaw came to power in shadowclan, but i wish it had explored his character better.

A pretty good story that fills in the gaps between the books. A bit anticlimactic though.

I'm not sure what this novella adds to the series. Sure, it explains some things about how Tigerstar rose to power in ShadowClan, but even though I forget how that was justified in the main series, I wasn't haunted by the exact question of "how" or "why." I was actually disappointed to learn that Mapleshade is somehow behind this villain, too. It felt too convenient of an excuse, and while I'm sure cats such as Thistleclaw had an effect in making Tigerstar the villain readers remember him as, I dislike the mechanic of Mapleshade literally speaking into his mind. Honestly, the biggest lasting impressions I got from this novella are the mistakes, such as referring to Frostfur as "he," which jarred me out of the happy nostalgia of seeing characters from the first series back on the page.

It makes me mad when continuity isn’t maintained, nor are characters behaving like themselves in further stories. This one was a major continuity issue.

So, Tigerclaw is super against kittypet blood in ThunderClan, therefore he hates Fireheart and Bluestar for being soft in leadership and trusting so closely in Fireheart. Okay, so then why is Tigeclaw completely okay with Russetfur, Boulder, Jaggedtooth, and Mowgli being ex-loners (and thus kittypet-descended) in his adoptive clan…? He never gives them a hard time, and even comments on Russetfur’s abilities..? Like cmon he either hates kittypets or he doesn’t. He’s so hell-bent on purging mixed blood cats once he takes over RiverClan, so, again, why are these mixed ShadowClan cats okay to him…?

Also why is this the first time he meets Mapleshade when he’s been guided by her, unbeknownst to him up to this point evidently? It just doesn’t make sense within pre-existing canon.

Am I missing something? Probably not.

I'm not sure which Erin wrote this book, but her descriptions of the forest were so vivid and probably some of the best you can find in the Warriors series to date.

Four stars because I wish they would dedicate a super edition to Tigerstar rather than a measly novella, honestly the villain we love to hate has much more to say than 75 pages of Mapleshade telling him to be a dick.

It's still a great 75 pages, though.

It was interesting to read a Warriors book from the perspective of a villain and helped give a lot more background on what Tigerclaw did upon his exile. All in all, it was an interesting read.
