The Island

Heather is a 24 year old woman who inherits a 14 and 12 year old when she marries Tom. They are vacationing in Australia when they discover Dutch Island. Typically, off-limits to outside visitors, they pay their way onto the ferry going to the island. Things start failing apart almost immediately upon reaching the island.

A high-speed, psychological thriller with a little too much violence for me. Three stars because of the violence. Otherwise, it kept me quite engaged and turning pages.

This was more action/adventure thriller vs psychological thriller, so if you're thinking it'll be like The Chain, it's not. It's still pretty edge of your seat, but in a completely different way. At first the family, the wife, her husband and his two kids are pretty insufferable and you really can't find anything redeeming about them, but as the story continues, you get some decent character development and learn a lot that helps alter your opinion of them. One take away is don't ever go off on your own exploring in Australia because it's a deadly terrain and you may not make it out alive. I like this author, this is the second I've read by him and he's very good at getting you right in the thick of it and ramping up the tension.

3.5/5

I definitely had to suspend my disbelief for a few parts and I found some of the writing so clunky but this was an exciting read from beginning to end. I did find the relationship between Heather and Tom disingenuous from the start, especially with Heather constantly saying that his only good trait was that he knew everything? (Literally he had no other good traits, just that he was smart) meanwhile, she was a badass and did whatever it took to get herself and those kids off the island

3.5- a good page-turner and it would make a great movie. A bit of erratic writing. Some of it wonderfully lyrical and some a bit simplistic. The story had you suspending a bit of disbelief given the number of people who knew their island vs. our young heroine but a solid thriller.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of The Island by Adrian McKinty in return for my honest review.
I really enjoyed The Chain by Adrian McKinty so was really excited to read his latest book The Island and it certainly didn’t disappoint this is a really fast paced thrilling read which once i started i couldn’t put down.
A family holiday to Australia leads the family to visit a small island to see koala bears one accident later and all hell breaks loose its the survival of the fittest. There is an interesting mix of characters and some very gory bits all adding to the atmosphere of the story.

Heather is a true *not like the other girls* girl

Ok but fr action was good, and crazy-Outback-inbred-family never fails to creep me out. However the dialogue was as if an alien wrote how they thought humans talked to each other.

I loved this author's book The Chain. This book took a bit longer to get into but it took off and then I was hooked. It isn't for the faint of heart. A good deal of violence.
