This is the last full Hamish Macbeth mystery novel M.C. Beaton wrote before her passing. It doesn't disappoint. I suppose they are considered "cozy" mysteries. Have been reading them for many years and they are just great fun. Recommended.

My favorite "cozy" mystery writer. Alas, this was her last book before passing. The last full novel in the Hamish MacBeth series. The whole series is worth your time if you like these sorts of mystery books. She had author R.W. Green assist her in finishing this book as she was ailing. (He also published a short story Death of a Laird after her death, take from his notes on her instructions for finishing that story).

Happy to have discovered this charming series (even if I am starting backwards with the most recent)! It is the quintessential “cozy” mystery with a great sense of place and a likable cast of characters.

I've read all the books in the Hamish Macbeth series. I loved the humor and zaniness of the early books. These books have been the ultimate comfort read for me. The later books deteriorated into repetition, absurdity, and too many dead bodies. Everyone is not enthralled with the new books written solely by Beaton's appointed heir to her series, but I like that Hamish has calmed down and become less of a one-note character.
I enjoyed Death of a Green-Eyed Monster, although like any true Hamish fan I knew I liked the setting and that we got to catch up with many of Hamish's former constables. What I did not expect was how I was a little worried that this was the final book in the series, but other titles have been announced. I hope Hamish can find some happiness in the next book, and what I really hope is that
And what's with that cover showing a black cat with an engagement ring in its mouth? Clearly chosen by someone who has not read the book....

that he would not marry Dorothy.Spoiler
extremely sad the ending is. Dorothy really loved Hamish, Hamish really loved Dorothy, and she is murdered right before their wedding. Waaaay too sad for a Hamish Macbeth book.Spoiler
he and Priscilla will finally get back together and stay together. And what's with that cover showing a black cat with an engagement ring in its mouth? Clearly chosen by someone who has not read the book....

With all due respect to dear departed Marion... this was not up to scratch. I appreciate that she was giving ideas to her 'ghost writer' and letting him get on with it, but, sorry, the best thing for this would be as Sonsie's kitty litter.
A fair story, a bit too much violence, all the old tropes dragged out.
Thank the Beeb that they're putting all of the TV versions of Hamish - bearing vague resemblense to the books - onto the iPlayer.

Can't get through it. I enjoyed the Hamish MacBeth series on TV, and I like the Agatha Raisin series, have not heard the adage, "Sho9w, don't tell," so we get a lot of sentences like "he was the happiest he had ever been in his life..." Moving on.

Hamish Macbeth is one of my favorite series; I adore Hamish and the town of Lochdubh. I was so saddened by M.C. Beaton's death. Per the preface, R.W. Green worked with Ms. Beaton on this novel and is continuing her legacy.
It is lovely to be back in Lochdubh. As the series has gone on, it has lost some of the sparkle from the earlier novels, but I still enjoy the characters. I think Mr. Green did a good job writing Hamish; he finds himself involved with a new woman in this novel. Some of the regulars made it into the story, it's always nice to see them.
Overall, if you're a fan of the series, I think you'll like this one. If you're not - I would start at the beginning.

The marriage proposal came too quickly for it to be believable.
