I received an earc of High Heat by Annabeth Albert from Carina Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about a book.

I was looking forward to High Heat. I enjoyed book one in the series as well as Annabeth Albert's previous book. But this one just wasn't for me. From the start, I wasn't clicking with the characters or the story. Which I found strange. I enjoyed Garrick in the first book and I was so looking forward to getting to know him more. But as soon as I was in his perspective, it fell flat to me.

Both Garrick and Rain were both interesting characters, but that is what they felt like; characters. I love when an author can make me see their characters as real people, but I didn't feel that here. They were entertaining and I liked getting to know them. But they were just on the page.

Garrick is this tough guy that wants to get to the job he was going before the accident. But he can't and it takes him a long time to realise that. I enjoyed seeing this. You all know me I love seeing different types of disabilities in books, and I really liked the way that Annabeth Albert explored it here. Garrett wasn't only dealing with the physical pain of his injury, but also the mental. I think that Albert had a great balance of this.

Rain was such a character - he did make me laugh several times. But then there were times where I felt that his personality took over the story in High Heat instead of helping it. If that makes any sense at all.

Overall, I was disappointed with High Heat by Annabeth Albert. I was really looking forward to Garrett's story, but I was disappointed with the outcome. The romance was something that I liked, but I felt the characters were a little flat. I enjoyed the representation of disability and the many aspects that come with it. But the plot didn't grab me. I might continue with the series - I will just have to wait and see.

Like always and like I expected this was a fantastic time.

The sex scenes are possibly my favorite of the whole series. Super hot teasing scenes; I love the flirting and consensual teasing. The light dom/sub vibes, amazing descriptions of Rain enjoying sex, Rain's love for pretty, sweet clothing, along with Garrick's deep appreciation for them as a part of Rain was beyond great. I enjoyed all of this so much. I also like that while the age gap is mentioned and is an obstacle, its very small and not agonized over.

Hotshot Garrick Nelson is recovering from an injury obtained while on the job, that has left him having to use crutches and a wheelchair. He's determined to recover enough to be able to rejoin the Hotshot crew.

Rain Fisher is known for not taking things too seriously, and for not staying in one place for too long. When a stray dog introduces Rain to Garrick, it looks like he might have found his place.

High Heat by [a:Annabeth Albert|6477494|Annabeth Albert|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1497461817p2/6477494.jpg] is an fun read that features: a super cute doggo that brings our characters together, an age-gap relationship, and a lot of steamy scenes.

Really loved the way this book showed Garricks disability without focusing too much on it.
The way the characters communicated their wants and needs was very beautiful

I love these stories that are without high amounts of drama.
Garrick is an injured smoke jumper. He’s working on recovering so he can go back to doing what he loves. His injury was terrible but he’s determined to rehab successfully.
Rain is a younger man visiting his grandma. His family thinks he’s flighty but he is determined to prove to them that he is serious about working for the fire service.
They meet one afternoon when an injured dog wanders onto Garrick’s porch and he needs help to help her.
The sparks are immediate and Garrick Agrees to train him if Rain helps with the dog. They are pretty up front about the attraction. They attempt to resist but they can’t.
There is some discussion of important issues: ED after spinal cord injury, fear of abandonment, families lack of faith, feeling unworthy..

There is some drama but it is relevant to the couple. I love these series so much.
