I really liked the premise of this and was glad about how it ended, but I guess I just couldn’t get past the feeling that a lot of the dialogue and writing was cringey and cheesy at times.

This was the perfect story to read right after reading “So You Want to Talk About Race”. A bunch of “woke” characters that don’t think they need to check themselves and a front row seat to how damaging and exhausting that can be. The main character is so cool and I loved her close female friendships. The first half was great but the plot fell a little flat for me towards the end. Still, I loved the character development (although I would have appreciated hearing less from the most annoying character, Alix).

The last lines pull it together in such an impressive way. Would recommend to anyone.

Stayed up late to finish this one and it went quickly! Incredible writing that is both funny and savage. Makes you take a nice, hard look at yourself. Compelling characters and I just couldn't wait to see what would happen. Could make a great movie.

Just as fun and truthful as everyone says this book is! Very current, young, and aware. We’ve all met Alix and Kelley in our lives, and it feels validating and entertaining to re-experience them with Emira’s perspectives. I wish this was a TV series!

I honestly don't know how I feel about this book. The opening was strong and I couldn't put the book down. However, there are major issues. The dialogue is stilted and that is being kind. I felt like the character of Alix was more fleshed out than Emira who seemed to have no personality at all. Also, the inciting incident that Reid spends so much time building up to is a let down. When I got to the reveal just thought, "That's it?" The first half of the book is stronger than the second. While I wanted to know how to book ended, I didn't care about any of the characters and the prose was just poor. I couldn't rate it.
