DNF
I *really* wanted to finish this, but it's in desperate need of a final proofreading pass. I usually can power through, especially since the story started strong with exactly what I was looking for: sports rom-com feel good vibes.
In the end, I couldn't get over the unfinished sentences, missing punctuations, and typos. :(

Fell in love with both Beth and Marc! I was able to read Jenni's 2nd book in the series first, and without spoilers, I didn't feel as connected to these two characters. But OH MY GOD, having read their own story, I love them! <3

Jenni's use of social media throughout the book was done so well, and it really showcases how a story can so easily be twisted into something it's not.

💚 ⚾️ More Than The Game ⚾️ 💚 (Book 1 of the Becoming an Evans series) by Jenni Bara

ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘:  4.5 ⭐️; 1.5 🌶️

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:

💚 I love the single mom trope. Truthfully we don’t see it as often as we should and I freaking loved it. I loved Beth in this book - vibrant, chaos, happiness, love - all of it. The only thing she didn’t have was the confidence to pretty much tell her dad to F off. She does learn to grow that piece of her backbone throughout the book and it made me love her even more.

⚾️ Marc was a big ole 🍆 most of this book - grumpy - set in his ways - not backing down - pretty much everything I love in an MMC. I did love his character growth as well but he truly had to work for it.

💚 I love Jenni and her work. I truly adore how she writes these books that just make us fall in love with the characters. We scream at them, we wanna throttle them in more ways than one - and it was really nice to finally step into her work.

⚾️ If you enjoy the single mom, the grumpy former baseball player with a chip on his shoulder, and two people who are complete opposites when it comes to being the medias darlings - this one is for you!

Beth and Marc’s story really pulled me in from the beginning. The playboy and the single mother couldn’t be more opposite and I love a good fake relationship so this book hit a lot of points for me. They’re both complex characters and I liked them from the start. Beth is a young widow and single mother with a bunch of overprotective in-laws because her husband’s brothers adopted her long ago. The family dynamics aren’t simple but the Evans brothers are supportive and protective without being overbearing and I really like the family dynamic. There are a lot of obstacles for the couple, from their totally opposite lifestyles to the unrelenting media attention that twists every aspect of their lives into public gossip fodder, but they handle it well.

This is an amazing start to the series. There is a lot that happens in Marc and Beth’s story but everything serves a purpose to advance their story which is really well paced.
Beth is such a strong character. She has had so much thrown at her in her life yet she has remained (relatively) unjaded. Beth is the beating heart of her family which includes seven brothers and her two young children.
Marc’s relationship with his father and his parents’ marriage has had such a negative effect on his opinions of relationships and how he views himself. So while he wants to pursue Beth, he doesn’t plan on forever with her.
When she was younger Beth was ‘thrown under the bus’ by her family and the media after an incident that she had no control over; due to Marc’s high profile media presence she spends a lot of time rejecting his advances and her attraction to him.
I loved seeing Marc change as his and Beth’s fake relationship slowly became more. He was such a swoon worthy hero, especially once he knew Beth’s past and did everything he could to protect her.
I loved how chaotic and loving Beth’s brothers were and how authentically her children were written, especially sassy Mandy. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
