Huh. From all the good reviews (and the title) I guess I was expecting something a little less corny and romantic, and a little more of an honest look at what the women Vietnam vets went through. Writing didn’t knock my socks off - probably good if you know nothing about the Vietnam War, but idk, felt pretty cliche throughout.
Loved reading the full first half -action packed and a new and interesting perspective of war. Second half was tough, both from being angry along with the heroine and from being annoyed at wanting more perspectives from the other women involved.
4.5 this book has me feeling all the emotions. It’s been a minute since I’ve been so emotionally engaged in a characters journey. I lost a little bit of interest towards the end finding it a bit of dog pile on the same issue. But hey baby, thats life. which is why it’s a 4.5 and not a 5.
An incredibly descriptive and heart-wrenching story full of fantastic characters and descriptive prose. Hannah captured not only the day-to-day experiences of those involved in the war but also the broader cultural context they existed in without it ever feeling like a history lesson. We follow Frances through the lowest of lows, the most unbelievable losses, betrayals, love and heartache, friendship, and the complete abandonment of the women who served by the medical system, the government, and the American people. Frances could not make a good decision to save her life but I loved her anyway. I cried like a baby at the end of this and could not stop thinking about it when I wasn't reading it, truly a stunning piece of historical fiction.
i think i felt every possible emotion throughout the course of reading this. this entire story is the reminder we all need in these trying times that community and solidarity are paramount. will be thinking about this for a long while and continuing to put into question my own bias and knowledge on this part of american history.
100% recommend this book. I’m not usually a history junkie, but wow—this story gripped me from start to finish. Kristin Hannah’s writing is incredibly moving, and the audiobook narration brought every scene to life in such a raw, emotional way.
Frankie’s journey was powerful, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I felt everything—her fear, her resilience, her anger, her hope. The way the book shines a light on the untold stories of women in the Vietnam War was just... beautifully done. It was informative without being dry, emotional without feeling forced.
This was my first Kristin Hannah book, and I’m already looking forward to reading more of her work.
