An incredibly descriptive and heart-wrenching story full of fantastic characters and descriptive prose. Hannah captured not only the day-to-day experiences of those involved in the war but also the broader cultural context they existed in without it ever feeling like a history lesson. We follow Frances through the lowest of lows, the most unbelievable losses, betrayals, love and heartache, friendship, and the complete abandonment of the women who served by the medical system, the government, and the American people. Frances could not make a good decision to save her life but I loved her anyway. I cried like a baby at the end of this and could not stop thinking about it when I wasn't reading it, truly a stunning piece of historical fiction.

i think i felt every possible emotion throughout the course of reading this. this entire story is the reminder we all need in these trying times that community and solidarity are paramount. will be thinking about this for a long while and continuing to put into question my own bias and knowledge on this part of american history.

100% recommend this book. I’m not usually a history junkie, but wow—this story gripped me from start to finish. Kristin Hannah’s writing is incredibly moving, and the audiobook narration brought every scene to life in such a raw, emotional way.

Frankie’s journey was powerful, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I felt everything—her fear, her resilience, her anger, her hope. The way the book shines a light on the untold stories of women in the Vietnam War was just... beautifully done. It was informative without being dry, emotional without feeling forced.

This was my first Kristin Hannah book, and I’m already looking forward to reading more of her work.

this book is perfect. i was engaged from the first page to the last, and my heart soared and stopped and raged and broke in between. women are forgotten in so many ways, in so many times, and this book not only works to address that in its existence, but also in its storytelling. kristin hannah strikes again.

Wow, an incredible piece of literature thanks to clearly impressive research, but also thanks to how engaging and well-written the characters and setting are. I learned so much about a period of history that I thought I already knew a good bit about.
