Friendship ended with Perrin.
Now Faile is my best friend.

The weird gender and romance stuff got worse in the book, dragging the parts I'd like down. Faile's relationship with Perrin being abusive but portrayed as normal in particular was just too much to for me to put up with. And according to my google searches neither of these problems get better so the series isn't worth my time and thus there's no point in finishing the book.

At this point in the series I’m *still* not entirely sure how much I like it because while the strong parts are STRONG, there’s still so much inconsistency in pacing that I can’t just tank through this series like others seem to. I also still struggle with how 90s some parts sound, particularly when it comes to the female characters. The related fatphobia at the end was also so unnecessary, if it weren’t for that I might rate this a bit higher. But it’s still not the 5 I was hoping for after hearing so many people praise this as their favourite of the series. If anything hearing that makes me nervous for what’s to come.
But I still plan to keep going, at this point I’ve sunk too much time and money into this damn series to stop now

'The Shadow Rising' is a great fourth installment in the 'Wheel of Time' series. This book sees some significant plot points and I felt that it advanced the story more than some of the previous books. I know that some of the upcoming books will start to drag so I am using the positive momentum from this book to head into the rest of the series.

Probably the best Wheel of Time entry so far. The Aiel getting the spotlight was super intriguing. Lots of interesting depth added to the world through learning about their culture. Perrin also continues to be by far my favorite character. Him and Faile really shine with their plot in this book. Especially in the latter half of the novel.

The major negative I have for this novel is how bored I was with Nynaeve and Elayne's plotline. I wasn't ever invested enough until their final chapter when they finally did something. But I will say, I'm now seeing Nynaeve as a future favorite character. She's become more enjoyable.

Looking forward to the next book!

Edit: Just a few weeks after finishing it, this book has aged very well. Particularly Elayne and Nynaeve's plotline which I was bored with. This is a very, very good book.

Update 9/25/23: Bumping this down to a 4 star. Still enjoyable, but much of the Wheel of Time series has soured as time passes.

I loved this book so much that I would rather go read the next book right now rather than figuring out my thoughts! 😄 I can't tell if I loved it more than the Great Hunt, but it's bigger, has a lot more going on and has enough moments to make you filled with awe. You get to see everyone you knew from Emond's field becoming even more 'badass' than before and I get the impression it's only gonna get better. I love Rand's point of view the most because regardless of his thoughts, we are also in the dark when it comes to his plans, just like everyone else around him and the tension keeps rising as story progresses. The antagonists aren't cookie-cutter anymore either as we get to see (view spoiler)Compared to Dragon Reborn's pace however, this one goes back to extreme descriptive mode again and you may find that the book is bigger than it should be, but that wasn't a problem for me. But yes, I think it's a favorite of mine! 😄

Why are these books so popular ??!

I struggled to finished this. If I’m not invested by book four, is it the writing style?

Overall - i found the book  frustrating. Poorly written. Poorly paced. Convoluted information and descriptions of action scenes.  Sexism woven into all the characterisations of female characters. And awful manipulation of events (all of the sudden msg has skills, rand can do magic without knowing, facile and Perrin are in love but it’s not believable).
