A most gentle magical story, complete with sprites/pixies/faeries. Our hero is one Roger Mulligan, who finds himself suddenly a butler, after successive careers as an Army medic and then an EMT.

His house comes complete with an older gentleman, rich as all get out -- how soothing must it be never to have to worry about money ! -- but possibly demented. Or not.

Foes emerge, along with allies and even a long, lost relative.

Mulligan finds himself soothed by his role and by his house. Given its salubrious effects, I would love to visit!

Will there be more? Unclear, but it seems the author has left the door open. What will happen to Shackleford House and all its denizens?

I loved this book from start to finish. It's about Roger Muligan who needs a job, it wasn't such a long time since he was in the service and he isn't adjusting to life very well. So he's desperate enough to take just about any job, even one working as a caretaker for a self-proclaimed Wizard whose Niece and Nephew proclaim up and down that the man is insane, decrepit, and on the way to a home any moment and all Roger got to do is take care of him until then.

I don't really know where the line between Urban Fantasy and Magical Realism goes, but I will say that this is almost entirely just a contemporary novel. Weird stuff happens, Magic tricks happens, but it isn't like Roger sees any weird magical beings or fireballs being thrown around.

What we do get however, is an incredible wholesome story about Found Family, about finding a new place in the world where you just fit. And leaving whiskey out for the pixies, of course.

The only negative thing I can really say about it is that Book 2 isn't out yet, and I can't find any other stories about being a Wizard's butler!

This was a pleasant read - not terribly dramatic, but enjoyable. I really enjoyed watching the main character settle into his new career and life. Also, there was some really skillful world-building here, as the author sets up this context and ideas like how magic works in it, while weaving these necessary details into the story. I hope there are more books coming in this series.

A touching story. Very long, but if you want a well described story about people, this is a great one.

Loved it!

A veteran and former EMT, Roger Mulligan takes a career change as a butler to old and wealthy Mr. Shackleton. Mulligan doesn't believe Shackleton's claim that he's a wizard until he meets the pixies.

I can't even tell you why I liked this book so much, except that I did. The writing was very good. The plot was low-key but still fun to read. Most of the book focused on Mulligan's everyday activities as he learned to care for Shackleton House, and him helping Mr. Shackleton in their efforts to thwart Shackleton's niece in her efforts to inherit the house. Not a hint of romance, and very little intense action. Just a fun, relaxing read.

Content: A couple instances of strong language, and brief references to a past incident of domestic violence. A very clean PG-13

Well that was a waste of time. Nothing happens.
