Sharkbait
Natural History #3
By Erin Mallon
Narrated by Erin Mallon & Teddy Hamilton

Looking for a couple to fall in love with? A book you can smile and laugh out loud to? A narration to love? Well, look no further, Erin Mallon's third book in the Natural History series is all that and more. This is Louise and James's story and it's so much fun! Louise is tired of bad relationships, blaming her parents for her lack of the ability to have a healthy one. Now she just wants to let go and enjoy a one night stand. Who better than the bartender? James takes on the challenge, chatty when he's nervous, and the two enjoy a quickie. But what happens when they meet again? This is just so much fun! From Cold Brew to Meilani the seal, we have a good time getting to know about James and Louise, as well as learn a little about the sea! It's fast paced, has fantastic characters(some we have met before in the first two books) and love that will fill your heart. There is something about the way Mallon writes, letting us feel like we are there, friends with this amazing cast and experiencing it all as it happens. It's a great listen that will leave you smiling.

And who better to narrate this one but Erin herself along with the voice in her head for James, Teddy Hamilton? These two are an amazing team, and truly bring all the humor and love alive. It's one you cannot resist! Grab it as soon as it releases!

Another fun book by Erin Mallon. This book had me cracking up from the first chapter. Cold Brew, I mean Louise, was trying to change things up in her love life. Having a one night stand with Jason was the easy part. She wasn't expecting everything that followed it. Love where story took Jason & Louise. Excellent Narration by Erin Mallon & Teddy Hamilton.

Flirtasauraus and Lovebug were on my 2020 and 2021 Top Favorites lists. I loved the group of crazy characters that I wanted to be friends with, and the feel-good giggles it gave me. So I was very excited for Sharkbait by Erin Mallon, the third book in the Natural History Series. Though it may be a little better if you read the first two to meet the friend group, it’s really not necessary. But I promise you’ll want to read them after.

Sharkbait is different than the two previous books. I was so surprised when Teddy Hamilton started speaking, because Flirtasaurus and Lovebug were only from the female POV. Sharkbait had more depth and emotion. And while it still had laugh-out-loud moments, it just wasn’t as silly as the previous two.
“Listen up because this is very important. After tonight? If you ever run into me again, we pretend this never happened. Got it?”

Louise, a marine biologist, just got out of a bad relationship and has no intention of getting into a new one. But a girl has needs, am I right? So one night she sees a hot bartender, drags him into the back and proceeded to make them both very happy (when he finally stopped talking). No names, no strings, no talking to each other after.
“Two months ago, the woman of my dreams walked into my bar, gave me fuck-me eyes all night, then dragged me into the walk-in refrigerator and proceeded to rock my world against some cold ass beer kegs. Now I keep seeing her around town, I can’t say a damn thing to her, and I feel like a total and utter chump.”

Turns out they kind of have the same friend group so he is pretty hard to avoid. James is 7 years sober, owns 2 bars and is a devoted dad to a little girl who just moved to Hawaii with her mom. James plans on following in a few months, but he didn’t expect to fall for someone right when he’s about to move away.

Louise isn’t as crazy as her two friends Calliope and Mabel, she has been the voice of reason, so most of the really silly moments were with those two women…except one or two, and you will know it them you read/hear them! Louise had a lot of baggage, so Sharkbait was deeper and more emotional than the first two. The addition of the male POV really let us get to know James better as well, though this story was mostly about Louise’s growth.
"You make me re-think sunsets."

Likes:

  • •Had me snort-laughing a few times.

  • •Visiting with Mabel and Calliope.

  • •Meilani the Sea Lion.

  • •I worked for the Welcome Wagon too, and loved Splash.

  • •Oral surgery scenes are always funny.

  • •Bonnie the Praying Mantis.

  • •James’s daughter and his relationship with her mom.

  • •He’s such a good dad.

  • •Louise’s Jeopardy habit.

Dislikes:

  • •She doesn’t like The Beatles? At least he does (but he quoted a Wings song instead of Beatles). Luckily she had a good reason.

  • •This book was written a little better than the others, but it wasn’t quite as funny. I think part of the first ones’ charm is that they were different than most other books—heavy on dialogue and didn’t follow a typical romance novel design. Sharkbait was a little more ‘normal’.

The Narration:

Erin Mallon narrating the characters she wrote is part of why I love these books so much. Her comedic timing is brilliant, her male voices are sexy as hell, and she is also great at serious stories. But doing the same with her own characters steps it up a bit more. Teddy Hamilton was perfect as James. I highly recommend listening to this series over reading it, because it’s part of what makes it so special.

The Down & Dirty:

I am so glad Erin Mallon will be releasing some novellas from the Natural History series because I’m not quite ready to let it go yet. I love this whole series and it’s interesting to see how much her writing has matured since her first novel Flirtasaurus. I absolutely loved Sharkbait, but it wasn’t as ridiculous as the first two, which is what I loved about them. Still, the laugh-out-loud moments and the deeper relationship still made Sharkbait a very special read.

Rating: 4.5 Stars, 3.5 Heat, 5+ Narration

Love this series!

Sharkbait is full of laugh out loud moments and plenty of swoony ones too. For this third book in the Natural History series we meet James, a single father and business man, and Louise, a marine biologist and artist. After a hot and heavy one time together Louise firmly puts James in the do not repeat corner...until life happens and he just won't stay there. When their shared friend group starts including them together the sparks fly and with a huge secret and James leaving town looming they make the best of their time together.

I have loved these ladies from the start; from Calliope and her sexcapades to Mabel who is now a nudist and now to Louise. Louise is quirky and driven but is not without her own hang ups. Those hang ups almost cause their relationship to be over before it began but persistent James kept on showing up. Both her and James fit perfectly into this little group and I loved that we got both of their POV in this book. We needed to know James' side as well and it just made him such a great leading man. Together they make a great team and make for a great story. Definitely recommend!

Erin Mallon never fails to entertain me. Every book…or play is filled with layered in thought-provoking subjects with the comedy, and she does it so well. Sharkbait was no different. I loved every second of this book. It was funny, as we have come to expect from Erin, it was charming, sweet, and steamy. I loved Louise and James’s journey. I went through the gambit of emotions with this book. I laughed. I swooned. I was even brought to tears.

This book is slightly different to the others in the series. A little more serious and has POVs from the heroine and the hero, which is my favourite, so I loved that change. Without doing a disservice to the previous two books, I do feel this book had more depth to it. There is still the comedy elements, but with more. It works. Trust me.

Teddy Hamilton as James was genius casting. The way James is written is how I imagine Teddy to be in his personality. Erin brilliantly voiced Louise…it is always a joy to listen to her. Together, Erin and Teddy are superb and a joy to listen to. A+

This audiobook was so great! I knew going in that it would be a cute rom-com, but I didn't expect it to exceed my expectations. Of all the books I've read and listened to this year, this one has THE most unique, nerdy, quirky characters of all. And I LOVED it.

The duel style narration with Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton was fantastic. There were times I was laughing out loud, and times I was tearing up. They are so talented as voice actors, and I'll pretty much listen to anything they do.

One of the more unique aspects to the story was that in this Grumpy/Sunshine trope, Louise is more of the grump. She has a one night stand with James and then tells him to never acknowledge her again if they run into each other. She is socially awkward, gets flustered around people she's trying to impress, has LOTS of family trauma with an absent father and a manipulating mother. She doesn't know how to handle her emotions.

James, on the other hand, feels everything very deeply and he's very expressive, confident, yet still has flaws. He is a total cinnamon roll, sweet guy who is a alcoholic who has been sober for 8 years and has a daughter.

James and Louise begin a very slow burn friendship and I loved watching that friendship turn into more. Their friends are also so interesting to learn about (and makes me want to go back and hear the first two books in this series).

So if you are in the mood for a different kind of rom-com, this is the one! 4.5 stars/2 spicy peppers

Buckle up for a wild weekend with some of my favorite new characters (I’m looking at you Tate). Three elves set-out for an inhibition free weekend and get more than they bargained for. I’m going to keep on reading my way through C.M. Nascosta’s list of works, and you should too - if monsters doing lots of monster “mashing” is your thing.

Thank you, Erin Mallon, Social Butterfly PR and Oh Yes She Did Productions for allowing me to participate in the Advanced Listener program. The following is my honest audiobook review.

Erin Mallon has done it again. In this latest and last installment of her Natural History series she brought her gang of characters back together in Louise’s story. Can a serial-monogamist marine biologist find true love while actively trying to avoid any relationship all together for fear of losing herself all over again in the guy? Well, leave it to Louise to have a one-night stand with a guy who is incapable of having a one-night stand, and who talks her ear off during the deed. All of this culminates in a laugh out loud romantic comedy told from Louise’s AND James’s point of view. Bringing in the second point of view with Teddy Hamilton as narrator was a brilliant surprise. Being a huge fan of the Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton narration duo made the audiobook even more special. Together they achieved a five-star performance.

Unlike book one and two of this series, Louise tends to take things a little more seriously than her counterparts sometimes, however don’t misconstrue my words - there are so many hilarious scenes (Note- Bonnie, the praying mantis). Nevertheless, as Erin herself explains in the “backstage pass” part of the audiobook, Louise has been the voice of reason for others, but this time the readers/listeners get to experience her personal struggles while becoming friends with James.

I shed a few tears while listening to Sharkbait. They were tears of laughter AND tears after being emotionally moved by Louise’s true love for the ocean and its wildlife. This story was especially touching for me because I almost became a Marine Biologist, and the way Erin depicts Louise and Meilani’s first interaction fondly reminded me of my first time to seeing a killer whale in real life. Sharkbait briefly yet gracefully touches on topics of abandonment, sobriety, family conflict and single parenting without going to deep.

A delightful read from page one! Erin Mallon shows that she's not only got the voice for romance narration, but she also has a unique, funny writer's voice for the written word. I enjoyed all the shenanigans (#mabelunleashed) and the sweetness of both characters. An adorable sea lion was a definite plus. It ranks right up there with the adorable child. The steam was steamy yet sweet, and as we discovered, our hero has many words and uses them at not always the "best" times. I need to read the other books in this series, and I look forward to that.

And I cannot stop hearing "Sharkbait OOOH AHH AHH!" Remember that from Finding Nemo? You're welcome.
