3 men and 1 woman extreme ecological warriors. It started off Ok but was all just a bit too much. On and on with repetitive destruction and beer drinking certainly by Hayduke. It was just tiresome in the end

Not my cup of tea... I agreed with much of the sentiment - against unecessary ravaging of land for profit among other things - but not the methods. The book itself had pretty dated language (very racist toward indigenous peoples and sexist) and oozed unnecessarily masculine energy. Some beautiful descriptions of the American Southwest landscape though.

the rampant sexism and grossly over-masculine characters are hard to get past. racism too although it plays a less central role. but lots of chase scenes and blowing shit up, was a lot of fun.

Would have liked it a lot better it weren't for the characters'/narrator's raging misogyny. (And before you tell me it's just the sexism of its time... No. I know what that is and I can deal with. See: On the Road).

A lot of fun, gleefully anti-industrialist, but also didn't love the writing style or the misogyny.

A little violent on the eco-terrorism side of things, but I think the idea is important. I suppose it was important for the time, before legal environmentalism became important. It's a good read...a little action adventure toward the end of the book, pretty suspenseful.

It's hard comparing books like this, that are very much products of their time with modern literature. I have to admit that I ended up appreciating this book a lot more after reading up extensively on the time period it was written in.

If you read this I have a few recommendations:
1) Realize the humor is very typical for the time period, as is the writing style.
2) Read up on the cultural norms, the cultural reactions to Vietnam, and how soldiers were treated/reacted to coming home.
3) Read a few gossip magazines or about the popular entertainment of the time.

While this book has an underlying moral message, it Lampoons everything from The Lone Ranger to the standard family sitcom, from the hippy culture of the 70s to religion. If you aren't familiar with these references there is a big chance you won't appreciate this book. I'd suggest reading a literary introduction written for one of the reprints, it should give you the proper context when opening this book.

This was a great book of "activism" (sabotage), comraderie, and romance (on second thought, more sexual situations than romantic ones, nonetheless entertaining). Although I enjoyed the book, I noticed some large ironies as well, such as profuse littering as well as the destruction of fragile desert soils from vehicles, not to mention the violence. Although incredibly entertaining, I don't believe the book advanced the proper attitude and reverence for the land, just mindless destruction. However, the author makes a point that legal battles and protests are often ineffectual against the system.
