I think I expected it to be a lot more timeless ... If I had viewed it initially as a historical work, I probably would have liked it more.
It was hard not to be distracted from the timeless stuff by all the cruel and unusual punishment, the sexism and racism. Like, it's hard to believe that only a few hundred years ago it was customary to cut off your enemy's head and display it on a stake.

Was this the worst thing I read while attending a Christian elementary and middle school? No. Am I still annoyed decades later that I had to read this? Yes.
Christian fiction. Epic. Classic.
Story: A man named Christian has a dream and is called upon to leave the City of Destruction, his wife and children, and follow the advice of an Evangelist and become a Pilgrim.
Characters: In the first part, Christian is the main character. He travels far and wide and comes across other characters, good and evil, with names suiting their character. In the second book, his wife Christiana is the main character, and she too comes across many aptly named characters.
Language: Very biblical, but not hard to follow. The character names make the book rather simplistic and the challenges the characters face all have very predictable outcomes, based on their names and whether they are good or evil, religious or not.
While not appropriate for today, it is a classic work of Christian fiction that should be read by any interested in Christianity or the genre of Christian fiction.

but if you must read, please read/take it with a grain of salt. this is fiction and believing everything here is optional.
1-star is being generous.

Great concept of hero and heroine archetypes, all the more moving in each character's individual circumstances. The novel's notable feature for rich allegory definitely never disappoints. So many insightful concepts brought me into deep philosophical reflections about life and morality. This might sound a little cheesy, but I felt I was spiritually enlightened through their journey. There are many religious implications that may conflict with one's personal beliefs; but I think the true key to enjoying this book is concentrating on the allegory, and how the meanings transcend beyond its time to resonate with human experiences. In short, John Bunyan was a master of his craft.
