The Burning Girl by Lisa Unger is the second book in The Whispers trilogy. It picks up approximately ten years after The Whispers. Eloise’s daughter, Amanda, has married and moved to Seattle. Amanda has two children, Alfie and Finley (whose first name is Emily). Eloise now has a friend, Agatha, who is also psychic and has helped Eloise learn how to handle/deal with her visions. Ray has retired from the police force and become a private investigator. Ray and Eloise work together to solve cases. However, the visions are taking a terrible toll on Eloise and her latest psychic visitor, The Burning Girl, is taking a heavy toll on Eloise. I enjoyed The Burning Girl but found it very short and it ended rather quickly. It felt like the story was not finished. I am hoping that the story line will finish up in the next book The Three Sisters (the last book in the trilogy). Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley/Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Received from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I requested this book specifically because of how much I enjoyed book 1. Short and engaging, I got swept up and was ready to continue with the series, even a full length novel.

Sigh.

Kind of lost the magic for me with this one. It started out super good. I love spooky, and the image of The Burning Girl just kind of hanging out and being scary ragey got my stomach all aflutter. I wanted more info, I wanted to know what happened to her, why she was angry, why everyone was telling Eloise to stay away from this one.

And....we didn't get an answer. Which is ridiculous.
SpoilerShe was mad because that woman stopped coming to see her, so she killed her baby? Really? That's it? Then why did she still come to see Eloise afterwards? What the hell? What was her backstory? Why?

And I realized while reading this one that I'm genuinely not interested in reading these stories in novel form. The first one worked beautifully for a short story, and I would've followed a book length version, but after reading this, where only 1/5 of the book was devoted to the psych-y stuff, I would be bored out of my mind with a novel.

It really makes me sad, considering how much I enjoyed the first in the series. Pity.

Just like the first, enjoyed the characters and the plot. This one seemed to be better developed than the last short story.

The Burning Girl, a novella and second (The Whispers #2) of three stories, spanning 30 years in the life of Eloise Montgomery, who discovers her amazing gift in the wake of tragedy delivered, by talented Lisa Unger.

The Burning Girl takes place ten years after The Whispers (#1) and Eloise is learning to control her psychic abilities with the help of Agatha, an experienced psychic. Agatha is questioning Eloise about her talents and gift and begins her genealogical search.

Eloise wants to use her gift to help others; however, she hears tons of whispers, voices and visions and she has to find balance in her life. Oh, and her granddaughter Finley is having visions. Eloise's daughter is married with two children, but has moved away, unable to deal with her mother's visions.

Agatha claims that Eloise's late husband, Alfie, sent her to help Eloise deal with her gift and talents, so it will not consume her. There is this girl, who is violent and angry and the smell of smoke lets her know when she's near. Eloise follows this young girl, The Burning Girl which is full of rage and evil and she wants to help her.

She teams up with private detective Ray to help solve the case as he is a retired sheriff and they have worked together to help find missing persons, plus they also have begun a relationship. Ray and Eloise are working on a case of a missing wife and dealing with the mystery surrounding the burning girl.

I read The Burning Girl, prior to The Whispers. I probably should have read them in order, as now everything falls into place. I enjoyed The Whispers #1, more--learning the background of this intriguing family, Eloise's heartbreaking story, and her newfound talent.

I also loved the tidbit of upcoming, Crazy Love You, included at the end, coming Feb 2015--sounds yummy!

Looks like we have to wait until the next installment for Whispers #3, with The Three Sisters (#3) coming Jan 2015! I am in for both!

Once again, loved this novella, it's just what I needed to put in place the happenings of Crazy Love You and again to get to know Eloise more. Perhaps if I had read this before Crazy Love You I would have enjoyed that novel more.

Another fantastic read from Lisa Unger and January LaVoy!!

There was only one really great part that had me like 😱 but the story as a whole is good.
My only real complaint is that we don’t get a great deal of backstory with the characters. And I know that’s how it works with short stories, but I’m so darn invested that I want more.

This book ends in a OMG way, that has me super ready to dive in to book three!!

Definitely worth it, but highly recommend reading The Whispers first!

This book was pretty good but not nearly as good as the first book in the series.
