I’ve been reading this book with my kids for the last couple weeks.
So many times in the book there’s this idea of girls being noisy, always interrupting. Like portraying it as a negative intrinsic characteristic related to gender. Even the uncle coming to build a “room/space” for the boy “to survive” being surrounded by sisters. It is never about gender, having noise and interruptions is having siblings-regardless of gender. Sometimes age affects, sometimes amount of siblings for others, but even those are not an absolute link.
I had to stop several times and chat with my children about this bias, that it doesn’t matter if you’re a “girl or boy” it’s about living in the world with others. That conversation is the only positive part I took from reading this book.
Anyway. Thought of sharing in case it helps someone else!

What a heartwarming tale! The story of five siblings who work together and will go to any lengths to save the home they love!
It's a sweet book with solid characters and a good story.
As far back as I can remember, I've loved books set in NY brownstones (was I brownstone tenant in a past life perhaps?) Couple that with a loving, eccentric family, and you get Karina Yan Glaser's debut children's novel. The Vanderbeeker kids have lived in their Harlem neighborhood all their lives. They love their home and their neighbors, so when the family discovers 5 days before Christmas their lease will not be renewed and they must move by New Year's, the kids make it their mission to change the landlord's heart and mind. A charming story that shows what a little determination can do!

Just a delightful book about families. True families and found families.
"Mr. Beiderman quietly surveyed the scene, and then he took a deep breath. Oliver, who had glanced over at just that moment, said later that it looked like Mr. Beiderman was breathing happiness into his body."
Oh my god!! My heart can't take this book. It has grown at least 3 sizes, if not more. I love the Vanderbeekers. I love Miss Josie and Mr. Jeet. I love Franz, George Washington, and Paganini. I especially love this Harlem neighbourhood where everyone knows everyone and life is idyllic. No wonder the Vanderbeekers want to stay forever

Really enjoyed this on audio with my kids. There was a character for everyone to connect to.
A modern Boo Radley story and those never seem to get old.
