I did not like this book simply because it had no red thread

I got about 2/3 into the book and started wondering if this was going to become a duology because I really wasn't sure how Erika Lewis and R.A. Salvatore could wrap up the story in the remaining time. I was wrong, they did a fantastic job and I loved the ending.

Maggie is a street urchin, adopted by a traveling magician, Xavier, who is OBSESSED with magic. Despite his constantly buying trinkets with any hint of magic instead of food, Maggie is content with her life—it’s safer and more stable with Xavier—until she sees a group of knights capturing a dragon. The dragon scratches her when she tries to intervene, unlocking a magic and a link with the dragon that had been buried deep. Determined to free the dragon but unsure how, Maggie finds her chance when she accidentally uses her magic in Xavier’s show and catches the eye of the prince—only the prince thinks it’s Xavier who is the magic one. Now, Maggie has to maintain the charade, while fending off the love struck prince, learning to use her magic, and figure out her emerging memories, all while trying to free her dragon.

This was pitched as a sort of prequel to Camelot, but the only mention of anything Camelot was a Merlin name-drop at the very end. I did like Maggie’s magic and its source, as well her origins and connection with the dragon. I also liked the city and how everyone was just sick of the King, but the King kept on doing what he liked 😆 It does seem to be a stand-alone, which is great, though I was worried in the last hundred pages that it’d be a series!

Cute book. I enjoyed the characters and as well as the development between Maggie and Griffin. Unfortunately, I felt like sometimes the characters were doing actions and going places with poor motivation to do these things. Such as Griffin taking Maggie to see
her dragon and allowing them to bond. In addition, I felt like Griffin and Magge weren’t at that part in a relationship for that to occur. The twist with Jori was unexpected and caught me off guard. I was skeptical when he wouldn’t turn away from Maggie once she told him off and flat out said she didn’t like him. Looking back, his motives and knowledge of her magic was definitely known by him the whole book.
There’s a lot more these authors could have done with this plot line and the story overall. A whole world and series could have been developed from this one book.

A very slow pace, uninteresting characters, and nothing new to add to the world of fantasy. DNF.
